Spring 2022
Soap, clay
The purpose of this project was to create a composite sculpture with two varied materials, soap and clay. The sculpture needed to be free-standing and also needed to convey an abstraction of the concept of “inside/outside” and what that opposing relationship means in terms of tension and/or presence.
For my first sculpture, I tried to abstract an idea that was more literal than figurative. I wanted to show the relationship between earth and urbanization, where the geometric clay represented the “outside” and the organic shape of the soap represented the “inside.” The idea comes from earth, once trapped and covered by modernization and buildings, reclaiming the abandoned structures and thus breaking the barrier from the inside to the outside.
The second sculpture I made started from a shape I wanted to carve rather than an idea. I am not an abstract artist. I can appreciate it when something speaks to me, but I do not have the proclivity to work in the abstract or a tendency to think that way, but I enjoyed the challenge to step outside of my comfort zone.
