Wire

Fine Arts Outstanding Merit Award & Charles Castro Memorial Award for Sculpture

For this project, we were to construct a “conglomeration” of insects using wire to create an open form, focusing on dimensional planes and volume. The bug creature also needed to fit within the dimension requirements and have a moving component, the purpose of which was to better understand form and functionality.

I mapped out the measurements on newsprint to make sure that it was within the size parameters then started off with a detailed and color-coded blueprint of what I wanted my bug to look like. I split my design up into “layers” so I could work on segments independently because I wanted the segments to interconnect, as a actual bug would. Creating separate segments to interconnect also made the required moving component move more fluidly like I wanted.
