8 Ways of Looking at a Piece of Paper
Spring 2022
Sculptures: Paper
Sketchbook: Micron pen, paper
The intention of this project was to challenge perception. We often take things as they are, at face-value and fail to see possibilities and potential. This assignment challenged us to change perspectives. By manipulating paper in different ways, we can see that it is not just flat and static, but by altering the form it can also be multidimensional and dynamic. This assignment also challenged us to pay attention to the process of design, from documenting an idea to conceptualization to presentation.
My theme for this assignment was stories, from which I would isolate a single element. I initially started with a lot of Greek mythology because it heavily influenced my early years. Then, my inspirations gradually turned to stories of different cultures and stories that were also nostalgic to me. By the end of the project, when all other stories had escaped me, my last inspiration for my last piece was just pure frustration. This assignment had a steep learning curve, both technically and conceptually.
I wanted to challenge myself to not repeat methods as much as possible and also to try new methods. I exceeded my own expectations in trying new things, for example, paper mache and “spinning” my own thread and weaving with it.
