Applied Qualitative Research Methods in Counseling and Psychology

This course provides doctoral students with comprehensive training in qualitative research methods and designs specifically tailored for counseling and psychology. Students will explore foundational and emerging standards of qualitative research, emphasizing the development of publishable research studies aligned with the expectations of top-tier journals in Counseling/Counselor Education, Counseling Psychology, and School Psychology. Key topics include literature reviews, qualitative methodologies, reporting standards, and analytic concerns central to the field. Students will: (a) critically evaluate and integrate qualitative research standards in reviewing peer-reviewed articles from journals in counseling, counselor education, and psychology; (b) apply knowledge of qualitative research design to address publication norms and discipline-specific challenges in counseling and psychology; (c) demonstrate an understanding of philosophical and epistemological foundations of qualitative research within the context of counseling and psychology; (d) design rigorous qualitative research and program evaluation plans that align with field-specific scholarly expectations; (e) incorporate ethical guidelines and culturally relevant practices, as outlined by ACA and APA, in qualitative research; and (f) engage in critical self-reflection to enhance qualitative research practices and address researcher positionality.

Advanced Career Counseling

This course equips advanced counselors and psychologists-in-training with the knowledge and skills to address the evolving career and vocational needs of diverse clients. Emphasizing career development as a cornerstone of counseling professions, the course explores theories, assessments, and sociocultural contexts influencing career counseling practices. Students will: (a) critically analyze and integrate emerging career development theories and vocational psychology research; (b) develop proficiency in emerging vocational assessments and counseling interventions; (c) evaluate the interplay of personal and career adjustment in diverse sociocultural contexts; (d) cultivate sensitivity to ethical and professional issues in career counseling, particularly with marginalized populations; and (e) address multicultural and global considerations in career development and counseling.

Leadership in Counselor Education: Professional and Social Advocacy

This is a doctoral level seminar is designed to support doctoral students in developing professional counselor educator identity while enhancing leadership, service, and advocacy skills within the counselor education profession. Students will gain knowledge about current professional developments and integrate various aspects of their doctoral training. Professional and social advocacy themes are interwoven throughout the seminar, emphasizing ethical, culturally relevant, and impactful leadership practices. Students will: (a) apply theories and skills of leadership to professional organizations and counselor education programs; (b) demonstrate knowledge of accreditation standards, management, and administration in counseling organizations; (c) evaluate current topical and political issues in counseling and their impact on practice and the profession; (d) advocate for clients and the profession using models and strategies at the individual, system, and policy levels; (e) integrate multicultural and social justice issues into leadership and advocacy practices; (f) employ ethical and culturally relevant strategies for leadership and advocacy.
