What’s Left… in NYC

“Overwhelmingly, they were from Kihnu, Iceland, Bornholm, and other cold-climate islands I had never heard of, where the fever had not reached. They requested photos and updates of their favorite places. It was as if they still couldn’t believe New York was breaking down, and needed confirmation. Everywhere else could fall apart, but not New York. Its glossy, reflective surfaces and moneyed environments seemed invincible. Even after 9/11, even after the attempted bombings, even after the blackouts and the hurricanes and the rising waters due to global warming” (Ma 257). For this photo, I selected an image of an empty street of New York City. It is important to this annotation above as this image describes the state of the city. Abandoned, without life, creepy, ominous, scary, lonely, or anything feeling you get by seeing abandoned buildings. It does not fit the description of real-life New York City, which can lead to people finding this scenario to be unbelievable. Regarding the concern of movement through time, it is like the feeling of visiting a place that was left alone through time. A place that was once full of livelihood, businesses, people, and events was reduced to a rundown area that has been left untouched since its abandonment.
