To John Lewis… (3)

Dear Mr. Lewis,

Reading pages 81-173 of the book, “March: Book Three”, did cover some more events during the Civil Rights Movement from your perspective, things that I never even knew about.

In this section of the story, I got to see how Fannie Lou Hamer made a big statement on her personal experience on live television. Lyndon B. Johnson was re-elected as President of the United States but still couldn’t win the South, even after the movement groups played by the rules. The S.N.C.C. went to go visit Africa to share the locals about ideas on what they were doing in the South, even meeting Malcolm X in the process. Those who were charged in the Mississippi Murders got dismissed and the protests that led to arrests.

The section of the book did cover a lot of more pages and content that it did surprise me in some ways. I didn’t expect Africa to look a bit quite developed. I imagined that it must have been in a more urban area since everything I have seen or heard about were from rural areas. What did not surprise me were the arrests of the Mississippi Murders. I did think that those whites got away with it because it was a southern state, and it had a previous history on slavery. Even after the Civil War ended, a majority of leaders did everything to keep some form of control. I don’t know why they didn’t accept the new changes and stick to it, since it was a clear loss.

People are a mystery and we tend to say that we do understand each other, but it’s far from the truth. I don’t know if we still face issues like this, but somehow, I know that we still do.
