What Do I See Hidden?

My name is Fernando Castillo, freshman at Georgia State University, currently majoring in Game Design & Development. My issue with the world is about discrimination towards immigrants. I don’t say that we had the right to settle there but if have good intentions or provide some use, then why are we labeled as an “enemy” to Anglo-Americans? The Courtyard is one of the most packed yet the most frequent place that I have ever gone to. When I need to eat something for lunch or need somewhere to go settle down for a bit, then that would be my go-to place. I would choose somewhere else but I feel as if that place is my “home world”. I chose this area because I thought going into a place full of different people from every variable would give me insight. Of course, it is a public area, so no one would dare touch on that subject, and I’m not the kind of person who would just go to a public place and be comfortable. Yes, I do have a voice but there is a difference between free-talking, on-the-spot talking, and public speaking. That’s why I started to consider my options on to approach the subject, and I may just have an idea how.

The purpose of the space that has been gone through on an analysis on was to see how people interacted with one another in a “common area”. “Common area” is defined as a place where people are always seen for a reason. A place like a restaurant for eating and a professional soccer match in a stadium. One example would be the Courtyard that is located in Student Center East. To give someone the basic rundown, there was a clear section to which the right side of the left were the bathrooms and the Information Center. The boy’s bathroom seemed to be undergoing through maintenance. On the left of the left where the angle was set was a self-serving machine, a Panther Power charging station, and a rack for the Georgia State University newsletters. Near the wall was just a hill going up to an exit. On the wall, there were two screens formed by two projectors that were above me. To the left of the right side was the Panda Express restaurant which served Chinese food. Down near the area were tables and chairs. The floor was a much more quieter area on one side but on the other side was the noisiest. There were two giant screens where students are able to play video games on, like Mortal Kombat 11, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Grand Theft Auto V, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, so that’s the reason why it gets heated, crazy, or overall noisy. The other side is quieter because the people were either reading, listening to their phone with earbuds, or do some other thing that involves a bit of silence.

To tell the truth, this doesn’t really make the most suitable place to prove about discrimination, but

The types of people conversing with one another.

just seeing people from the outside wasn’t going to be enough. Going deeper inside would make the difference here. But just to make sure that someone could get the idea on who was there, all of them were of different races and ethnicities, like african-american, white, hispanic, middle eastern, and from other parts of the world. No one could easily tell unless they ask. The students occupied so much room that they had to borrow chairs from other tables just to sit down together. They used slang that only certain races were allowed to use, otherwise had a different kind of conversation. Someone was on the high chairs doing their homework, all alone. People were coming in then walking out since the whole place looked packed. Even though there was some room, they didn’t take the time to analyze. It doesn’t help that those who were alone took up the extra space just to settle their stuff down. Can they be blamed, though? But the point here is that they were all of a different race or ethnicity. The tables either had a mix or people of their own kind. It is a relatively public area, so no one would dare attempt to prove the societal issue, right? Well, that is the reason why going through the person’s brain (not literally, of course) is the reason why it must be proven. So after some observation, I came to several conclusions. Everyone talked to each other like they were best friends for years, so there was a thought that they are trying to connect with one another. Some others were alone, looking a bit depressed. It could have been something that happened at school, like venturing into an area where they had a not-so-pleasant experience. Was there a way to prove it? No, but there are so many possibilities.

We are in a country where there it is one of the most mixed races (or ethnicities) in the whole world. The reason for that is that it has come from economic opportunity. The United States is an economic powerhouse, and foreigners from other countries are poor. Additional problems include warfare, corruption, and a bunch of problems that could’ve been prevented ages ago. So what better choice to make but to come here and get a better life? Unfortunately, that isn’t what it’s cracked up to be. Many immigrants have faced a sense of discrimination at least once in their lives, and that fact that laws are preventing them from certain things don’t do much better. So much that immigrants and their children are now isolated to nothing. It makes the community rage to think that Anglo-Americans have the audacity to nullify their basic human rights just because of whatever they could think of, but most people will want to change that to the best of their abilities.
