This is the second project we did this semester which was also split into two parts. In the first part, we had to choose a photo from a magazine of an image with different shapes in it that we were able to use and take a few of those shapes to use for the different parts of this project. In the second part of the project, we used black paper and ink to recreate those chosen objects but created different pieces using them in different ways. The photo from the magazine I chose was an outdoor photo with a garden. The third part of the project we had to take a childhood story and create in a modern sense with a modern problem in it. We would use black paper to create the characters and background.
This was the first one of this part of the project. We had to compress the different objects we chose from the image we chose from a magazine. The objects I chose from the image were two parts of different buildings, a bush, a plant shelf, a ladder, and a bucket. I struggled a bit with the positioning of the ‘blob’ in the middle with positioning each piece so that it doesn’t look too much like a big ink circle, that it had some white parts in it, and with keeping the image compressed but also having a little something on the border of the painting. This one is of the parts of the image that we chose to use in different textiles/textures. I had taken some clothes from the cupboards outside the class to use for the project with some of the black paper I used before. The yellow and red parts were from the same cloth but on different sides which you can kind of tell because of the patterns on them. It was really hard to cut the fabric with the exacto knife because it would keep ripping out the seam of it and breaking apart. It came out quite well in the end. I see this as all the objects in outer space, and each object is from a different planet so it looks different but similar.
This one is my favorite of the three and it was supposed to be the objects drawn on the paper but you can’t tell if the background is supposed to be black or white. The whole idea was really confusing to me at first until I started drawing it then I got the hang of it. I like how you can see some of the buckets are black on a white background and some of them are white with a black background.
For the third part of the project I chose the story of Beauty and the Beast and the problem was judging a book by its cover. The situation was that Belle didn’t want to work with Adam because she thought he was scary. After getting to know him she realized that he was a nice person after all. I created an Adam, and Belle in two different versions, Lumiere, and a teacher character with black paper. I enjoyed cutting the characters out and loved how Adam came out, especially his hair.
