Seeing Through The Smoke.

city-backpackers

In between Piedmont North A and North B, an outside area hidden behind a parking deck exists. When approaching the designated smoke area an umbrella can be seen casting shade over one of two tables. While seated at either of the tables, one will immediately whiff the signature odor of tobacco as it pervades the air. Inspecting the area for the source of the smell, one’s senses would direct them to a small pyramid shaped ash tray with a mound of cigarettes and loose tobacco in its interior. The ashtray’s corners are encompassed by charred remains strikingly similar to the two tables in three feet proximity. Ash on the tables appears smeared like flour on cutting boards to the point the true hue of the tables is obscure to the naked eye. When either is wiped, a royal blue is revealed to be sleeping under the blanket of ash. Amongst the sight and smell of tobacco, horns, engines and sirens invade ear drums. In the direction of the sounds there are metal rails, halting one from continuing further. Initially, at the edge of the rails the horizon greets all who observe it but, below where vibrations in the air are emanating from, there is a highway. Cars can be seen running rampantly down the road in droves. Like ants off to work the cars converge in multiple streamed lines in the lanes onto them.

When questioning the objects and design of the space, revelations about the environment are unveiled to the observer. The smoke area’s location is inconspicuous, as if it was an intentional act of the school to give those who decide to smoke privacy or to obscure those people from the general public’s sight. This privacy gives off a feeling of being isolated from everything else and allows people to socially open up without precautions. The tables being oblong with seats around them contribute to the connectedness one feels while at the smoke area. The Royal Blue being the centralized school color also contributes to the connection one feels at the smoke area. In addition, being that the area is located on campus and accessible only through ID makes all who inhabit the area know that they are connected some way through the school Equally interesting there is only one umbrella, but there are two tables. The perceivable benefit of having one umbrella is that it allows flexibility for anyone’s preference of the current weather. If someone wanted to smoke while it was raining the umbrella would dutifully shield them while they are under it; if it were hot then someone could remain in the sun as they might like the heat or take refuge in the shade of the umbrella. Having one umbrella accommodates the many different preferences of people who would occupy the space. Also, the location of the smoke area being above the highway, gives a scenic aspect to it. While the sounds of the cars alone can be stimulating, the addition of their view paints a far greater portrait whether in day or night.

People who choose to occupy the space vary from person to person. There are three females under the umbrella topped table. Two of them are wearing Georgia State affiliate shirts, however the one on the far right is wearing a lime colored shirt with shades covering her eyes. While looking into their lively faces the first thing noticed about them is the smoothness of their skin and the way it radiates their color. Two of the young ladies have pale complexioned skin, like the interior of an apple. The young lady’s, center of the three, skin is comparable to a dark coconut color of even gradient with a subtle deepness that could trap one’s attention. None of the girls were smoking; instead they were studiously doing an assignment together. The trio of girls seemed joyful as occasionally one out of their group would bellow laughter and smile at the others while they did their work. A column of smoke blows by in front of their image. Focus, is then drawn to the left of the group of girls towards the source of the hazy nicotine filled clouds. There was a guy slouched over the rails looking at the high way and puffing an enormous cigar. His skin had a similar hue to beach sand. The statue of a man wore grey sneakers with jeans and a black shirt. His expression was stoic and he rarely moved aside from lifting the cigar to and from his mouth. From time to time he would take a big puff an exhale marginally louder than that of a normal breath, as if he were sighing and releasing some inner turmoil into the air. His eyes were a static deep blue and reflected a conscious mind’s pondering. Sitting across from the girls past the trailing smoke, and at the other table was a man with a Georgia State insignia on the upper left side of his shirt. His posture was hunched over as he took bites of a burger from the bag in front of him. He was very large but not necessarily lean-massed. His head was bald and glistened with sweat. He wore a light blue collared shirt with blue slacks. There were letterings on his shirt that spelled out “Apogee” under the Georgia State insignia. He smacked his lips as he devoured his fast food without hesitation. He kept looking at his watch in between intervals where he would slow his pace down.

Many people in the space seem either completely internally focused or completely extroverted. The area allows one to get lost in their own thoughts with the help of the environment and if it’s group. The trios of girls while they don’t smoke are still attracted to the location because of the privacy and low traffic of it. The girls most likely also enjoy the feeling of just being outside and choose to do their work there without anything to draw away their focus. The guy over the rails looking down on the highway is receiving some feeling from watching the cars go by that he enjoys. It is apparent he enjoys that sight significantly because if he wanted to, he could sit down and smoke instead of hunch over the rails. From his behavior it can be assumed he’s delving into introspection and catharsis with each inhale. The Apogee affiliate was presumably on a lunch break or simply eating to meet some timed criteria, He enjoys the separation from the rest of the campus that the smoke area gives off. This is supported by the fact that he could have eaten in the dining hall or at another area, one that is not so secluded. As a whole this space certainly appeals to an interesting group of people from the trio of girls, to the lone smoker, and to the time crunched man.

GSU LIBRARY

library

The Georgia State Library, hold countless numbers of  students and staffs. The library only allows students and staffs here. One can tell because there is around two to three security guard outside each exit of the building. These security guards make sure that these students are actual students here, provided if they have their student ID with them. They will also need their student ID to go in the library. The library contains many items. For instance, a renting station, where one can rent out laptops, school supplies, and more. There are also computer stations, they are for students and staff to use. Additionally, the library also contains numerous couches, with different colors, from the first floor to the sixth floor. On the third floor of the library, students are seen almost everywhere, sitting in the tables and chair in front of the elevators, to the teal couches on the middle of the library north and library south, or at the computer stations in front of the elevator in front of  library south. The chairs allow the student to sit down and relax if they deem it necessary. The computer stations provided the students an access to the internet and its online resources for those who might not have a computer at home or those who just wanted to use a computer at the moment. The tables and chairs allow the student to do their homework on, study, eat or even nap on. Overall, these items are provided to the students for their own needs and wants, either if it is going toward their educational needs or not.

The GSU Library contains many occupants and for countless reasons. One girl, who was obviously a student here or else she couldn’t have gotten in,  was five feet tall. She had blond hair and blue eyes. She was sitting on one of the blue teal couch. She was wearing an oversize shirt with some black legging. She had her laptop out, placed on her folded legs, and was dancing rapidly with her fingers on her device. She was extremely focused on what she was doing since she didn’t even pick up a phone call. There was another student who had occupied the library, He was six foot tall, with light brown hair and pale skin. He had on a denim jacket, black shirt with matching ripped black jeans. He was sitting on one of the round tables, with textbooks laid out covering half of the table. He had on headphones and was chewing on some chips as he skims through his readings. Slowly the table was filling up with sheets of papers, full of words, that he had written. There was another student in the library at this time. She was sitting on one of the computer areas. She had long black hair covered by a black beanie, and she had on a shirt with flower designs and blue jeans. She had her face 2 inches away from the screen and the sounds of fingertips to the keyboard was extremely prominent in the quiet part of the library. The light from the computer screen had highlighted her distinct eye bags. The more she type, the more she yawns. After being done at her computer station, she had grabbed her stuff and walked to the library south elevator.

The occupants here seems to value their education dearly because they would make time to go to the library to study. They are also very determined to get their work done. For instance, instead of studying at the dorm or home, they come to the library because there could be distractions at their dorm or home. Furthermore,This space controls the way students interact with the environment and it teaches people to be on their best behavior and be respectful to others. The library is inviting to every student at Georgia State. One reason why I know this is because it is located right in the middle of all the campus buildings. It has many resources from; hardcover textbooks to novel books, for students to read and check out. The chairs located everywhere from the first floor to the second floor, allows the student to relax in, while the students study, eat, or sleep in. The stairs and elevator give the student a choice of walking up the stairs or riding up the lift. The computers provided at the library, give students who do not own a laptop the option to do their work on them.Overall, the library is one of the best places to not only study in but to relax and getting to know its occupants.

Team Nissan Part II

As I arrived at the dealership for the second time, the first thing I saw again was the giant Nissan logo. There is just something very iconic about the giant logo. They kept it very shiny so it reflects light onto the road drawing in people in. The first thing you see as you turn into their driveway is the high-end cars. Cars that cost about fifty thousand and up. There were cars like 2017 Infiniti Q60s and Q50s. There was also 2016 Nissan GTRs next to the Qs. They looked washed and extra shiny. When the sunlight hit the cars, the sunlight bounced everywhere. It just screams look at me even at the corner of your eye. The cars in the back of the dealership were all average cars. Cars that only cost fifteen thousand and up. There were old Altima and Maxima everywhere in the back. The cars back there wasn’t there to draw attentions because it was out of sight. You have to look really hard to see what cars were back there. They were there because everyone can’t afford expensive cars. They were there for the everyday average joes. The cars in the front might be there to make the customers make impulse purchases.

The building was made of mostly out of glass. All the walls were made of glass except for the corners. The corners were just plain white concrete. The floor was half carpet and half marble tiles. The carpet was a gray color that was short and clean. You can tell that it have been vacuumed. It was almost dustless. It was very clean and well-maintained. The tiles were in a diamond shaped pattern, and it had a gray square in the middle. The tiles had a clear coat that helped made it look cleaner.  On the side of the building, there was a giant red Nissan writing down the whole left side of the building on the outside. The glass wall was surprisingly clean with no fingerprint in sight. There was a janitor that was in charge with exclusively cleaning the glass. The clean glass is very important. If the glass was dirty then people who looked through it will see the cars in a worse view. They do that to make the cars inside stand out and if the glass were dirty then everything inside would look dirty. The janitor had a coffee complexion and was a very tall man. He was probably 6’6 feet tall. He wore loose jeans and a plain white T-shirt that had a monkey on it. The height helped him reach to clean the very top of the glass walls.

When I walked in the building, I could see two brand new cars facing each other diagonally. The car on the left was a brand new 2017 orange Nissan GTR. The GTR had the premium interior package which outclassed every other car at the dealership. The other car was a white Infiniti Q60 with the most expensive packages. The two car sat in the middle of the dealership allowing for people who sat inside to stare at its beauty. At the top of the two cars, there were four spotlights shining down at the cars. The spotlight was way brighter than the room even though there were glass walls. There is a mixture of yellow and white light to help bring out the contour of the car. It highlighted every corner and curve of the car.  The spotlights alone made the two cars look ten times better than it really is. Besides the car, the inside of the shop had a lot of offices.   Every dealer had their own office that can shut off any outside noise. It gave the customers a sense of security, and it allowed them to discuss all their concerns. One customer that I interviewed agreed with me. He said, “that the rooms were close off and allow him to talk about his financial situation”. No one could hear what was going on inside the room since the room were sound proof.  In the main lobby, there were only four coaches. Two of them were red and the other two were white. The wasn’t enough sitting for people to wait so only the buyer sat inside while their family sat on the outside. The couches itself had feathers inside of it. It shaped itself to whoever sat down on it.  The outside had about six benches that were made of steel. The steel benches made the dealership look basic and made it painful for people to wait.  The benches were short and couldn’t fit a family of four on it. The families had to split into two groups because the benches were too small. The coaches inside were placed in a square which made the people who sat down very awkward. Out of the ten people I saw for my hour, there was always on their phone. They never looked up or made eye contact with each other.

I interviewed Eddie Diaz, and he said, “There wasn’t enough chairs in their man. I had to sit outside in the hot sun”. The low amount of sitting space is a major role in how people interact in this space.  That was the only problem that Eddie had with the shop. Everything else was fine to him. The front of the shop when the expensive cars were packed with people just looking at it. There were at least fifteen people there just looking. None of them brought the cars up there except for one lady, but the cars did their job to draw in the customers. The one lady that did buy it looked rich. She had pale white skin with blonde hair.  She had on a Louis Vuitton purse and a suit. Her suit was black with white stripes running vertically downwards. She had her hair tied up in a ponytail and had on sunglasses on her face. She was only in the shop for about thirty minutes and she walked out with on of the newest cars in the front.

Into Space

Walking into H&M one of the many stores inside the Mall of Georgia and even before you step foot into the store leaving the carpet of the mall into the hardwood floor of the store you notice the mannequins shining from the spotlights behind the glass walls no matter which entrance/exit you stand, two on each side 5ft 5in in height and are in a pose. There are two double doors to enter at one from the walkway like other stores or from the side where the escalators and stair are located. The mannequins on display wear clothing that is sold in store some admire the mannequins on display while others just pass it as if it were not there. The clothing they sold wasn’t just shirts and pants you could also see scarves, makeup, shoes, hats, even backpacks enough to cover every part of skin on your body. All around some clothes have one color like the table that had a stack of white V-necks put next to a pile of black V-necks, others share colors like the section that had a burgundy and cream jackets, others have floral patterns, and pieces of jewelry. Walking around the store many clothes racks that were 5ft tall had a bright red tag on the top with prices under twenty dollars mainly on the shirts and dresses. Those particular sections had more people surrounding it that other sections. One section near the checkout had a hat rack and what looked like a bookshelf of shoes and boots the shirts and jackets that accompanied them had cities and country names printed on the front all in different fonts, sharing the color of the night sky.

There were many people inside the H&M that Sunday afternoon. You can see one group of four females looking at sandals, one carrying a bunch of shirts in one hand and you can also see one group of males looking at skinny jeans some with dress shirts. Towards the back where one wall has a big glass window overlooking the food court few people no taller than the checkout counter glaze at the sight of the crowd many lines and more people than there are chairs. A select few with nametags are behind the checkout counter ringing up customers some have small conversations with them, sharing a smile and always having eye contact. When there is no one in line, they talk with each other and the others that are walking around wearing all black or few with clothing that looked like any other person there talk with customers trying to help them and all have walkie-talkies on their person. Inside the store, you don’t notice just one specific race or age group. You look around to see one girl alone one by one looking for the shirts and making faces at each one she sees. Two people came in holding hands while one was looking around and picking up clothes the other just walked around H&M staring at their iPhone.

I was able to speak with one of the customers at H&M, and her name was Kristen, a college student, who was out with her college friend. I asked her a few questions about the space. She talked to me about why she likes H&M over other retailers within the mall. She said that most things they sell appeal to her style and are sold at an affordable price; apart from just clothes she likes the scarves, bracelets, and other accessories. She mentions that she has never heard of H&M up until a few years ago and since then hadn’t had one particular place to shop however when I asked her how it would affect her if H&M were not to exist she would just go to another location. The only thing that she would like to change to make it even better for her was if they had a wider variety of clothes and styles including lowering some prices as she feels it helps out people on a budget such as college students.

Back to Suwanee Park

The Park is more crowded than the last time I visited. There are more people walking on the sidewalks than playing in the wide, luscious, green fields. These fields are about half the size of football fields and are usually occupied by people wanting to throw footballs or frisbees. The sidewalks were paved all over the Park, making you able to view the it in every perspective possible. As I walk on the paved, grey, pathways, I see a girl I am familiar with…a girl whose name I do not remember. I do not approach her or say hi, since the last time I saw her was sometime in middle school. She matured much more since then. Her stature was tall–looked about 5’7.  Her hair is no longer in the bun or pushed back with a headband she always kept. Instead, it is straight down past an inch of her shoulders. Her skin is the color of milk chocolate, but a little lighter. Her style is now intimidating as she wears a black leather jacket and black jeans. Her friends walk beside her on both of her sides on the sidewalk. They are talking and laughing. She and her friends then enter a cupcake store, Jilly’s Cupcakery, across the street. I decided to move my location where the restaurants are too.

I can see the Park from the side where all the restaurants are lined up on the right. I never realized how spacious the entire Park was–it covers approximately 10 square miles. There are many tables and chairs–a majority of them being black and made out of metal–in front of the restaurants, facing the view of the Park. There is always shade, so it is a great place to cool down, relax and get your hunger satisfied with one of the various types of food that consists mostly of American and Italian. There is also a sidewalk that runs along in front of the line of restaurants for easy access. I am sitting on a plastic, 3 foot orange stool right in front of a frozen yogurt store, Yogli Mogli. There is a picture of frozen yogurt that screams “Eat me! I’m delicious!”  pasted on the window that is similar to the size of our classroom whiteboard. I smile as I watched a child babble, tug on his caregiver’s shirt and point at the picture, wanting to eat it. I realized that the restaurants were very good at advertising after I noticed my attention had been pointed to the smell of BBQ wafting in the air. Stopping myself from spending money, I decided to go back to the Park.

Walking on the Park’s paved sidewalk, I wink at my little sister as she walks by me with her fingers laced with her boyfriend’s. I look around and see groups of many people. Different races and different ethnicities. My attention always goes to the pets I see at the Park, then the owners. A black and white hound that was bound to a well built black man, accompanied by an elder woman with a hunched back, hands held behind her and gray hair, a little girl that came up to the man’s hips, and two boys a few inches taller than the girl. A white Maltese that looked 10 inches long and 2 feet high was being walked by a young Asian woman, who was holding the hand of her partner. I knew the man next to her was her partner since she had addressed him as “honey” in Korean and both were wearing rings on their left ring finger. And upon looking at a familiar shaved Yorkie, I saw my friend from my church. I ran up to her, said hello and began walking with her and her dog. She was alone, but came to the Park with her parents. After what I had seen and heard, this convinced me that the Park was mainly occupied by families more than friends. Taking this unexpected meeting as a perfect opportunity, I decided to interview her.

Starbucks

The interior of the cafe is not that spacious, but wide enough to fit about fifteen people in, while still having room for some elbow space. The two workers, in their green aprons with the well known siren logo printed in the center, shift their feet back and forth behind the counter occasionally spilling milk on the hard, dark grey tiled floors, while rushing to get everyone’s drinks made. On the other side, a tall, young man with fair skin enters wearing a blue flannel and dark jeans, while he holds hands with his significant other, who is wearing a dark grey hoodie,  and has her brown hair pulled back into a ponytail. She has a rather milky complexion. As they close the clear glass door, a slight humid breeze can be felt from the after effect of the rain that occurred earlier. Additionally, the girl’s worn-out white Chuck Taylor’s and guy’s Nike sneakers begin to squeak as they make their way to the register. Their wet footprints leave a trail, but it is not obvious because of the dark floors. One can infer that the option to choose darker flooring over lighter ones were intentional for this space.

When the couple finally step up to the tan “L” shaped counter, they greet the short, pale female worker with chestnut colored hair and proceed to make an order. The counter top is divided into three main sections. On the right are brown and golden pastries that are displayed through a clear glass showcase that give off a sweet aroma when one of the workers slides it open, and right below is a small, black refrigerated area that has sandwiches and canned drinks that customers can also buy. Towards the center is the bulky, rectangular cash register, where the female worker is completing the couple’s order by handing them their receipt. Finally, the left side is an open black counter space, where all the customers drinks are placed when they are all done. Here the guy and girl wait until the other tan, average height male worker with broad shoulders calls out the names of their drinks; a tall caramel macchiato and a grande mocha frappuccino.

Right next to this area is a few, square-shaped, single couches that are pushed against the walls on all three sides. Two of them, colored olive green are right next to outlets, which are currently occupied by a young woman with glasses and ash blonde hair with a plain white long-sleeved shirt and jeans on. She is looking down at her Mac book that is plugged into one of the outlets with her back straight as she takes a sip of her drink. Another dark male that has on a striped black shirt is sitting in the other seat, similarly mirroring her actions, but is more slouched down. No one else seems to be sitting in the other seats across from them but there are more customers at the actual tables. Half of them are seated next to the large glass window that display the word “Starbucks” in large green letters, and the others are close by. The close proximity of the tables might not be ideal for large groups of people to gather, but it is efficient for individuals who want to study alone or just have one-on-one conversations with another person. In an interview with one of the customers named Michelle, I found that she comes to Starbucks to do her homework and study. People like Michelle, who is a college junior need an outlet, so they try to sit closer to the wall, which she was at the time. She also mentioned that she prefers Starbucks over other cafes because they have good Wi-fi. This concludes that some people occupy this space for the internet connection.

Although the main objects of this space have been discussed, there are still some minor objects that serve as functions too. One of them is the bathrooms, which are located down a small hall, but far away from the kitchen and the customers. They are most likely located there for sanitary purposes. Also, the aroma of coffee when you first walk into the shop is probably a direct effect from the coffee beans that are displayed on a small shelf not far from the main door. Across from this shelf is an even bigger shelf that has various cups and tumblers with different designs. It is mainly there for customers to buy. Occasionally the customers stop by this shelf to take a look while waiting in line, but no one ended up buying one. Lastly, next to the side door of the store, there is a tan compartment with smaller compartments that hold straws, sugar packets, and napkins with two openings that serve as trashcans below. Customers visit this area often because it contains all the supplies that they might need, whether to clean up a spill or to make their drinks sweeter. Overall this place has many aspects that make it convenient for the customers and satisfactory, which makes Starbucks a reputable place.

GSU – Student Center East

As you enter the doors of the student center you are immediately filled with nothing but curiosity and wonder. The interior of the main lobby is humongous, as you walk through the door on the immediate right side is a section for students to relax in some gorgeous chairs. The chairs themselves come in all shapes and sizes, not to mention directly in front of the chairs are glass covered desks where you can sit your laptop down and work on homework. Some of the chairs are grey and a light shade of brown, but what most students love about them are that the armrests are so cozy, many students fall asleep in them. Sitting in one of the chairs is a light skinned male dressed in a light blue Georgia state hoodie with a large angry panther on the front sipping from his coffee working on his computer. He glances up as a short blonde female walks by and waves and says, ” Hi”. In a chair next to him is a pale brunette female asleep wrapped up in a small orange blanket. As her earphones are hanging out of her black and white striped sweater, her phone drops to the floor making a loud thud. She then jumps up and in a quick hurry stretches her skinny noodle-like arms and retrieves it. Just about every day you come across groups of students laughing uncontrollably here. In addition to that, there are tons of vending machines located literally about ten feet from your cozy chair where you don’t have to travel so far to grab a delicious mouthwatering chocolate bar or a crispy bag of barbecue chips.

One of the best attractions is to have lunch at the courtyard food court located on the third floor of the student center. As a young light skinned male is seen eating out of a steaming hot plate of spaghetti, his light skinned female friend is seen sitting next to him eating an scrumptious chicken sandwich. Two tables in front of this duo is a tall fair skinned male sitting down at a table alone putting in his earphones and beginning to eat his nutritious salad filled with a great variety of lettuce and chicken. About ten minutes later a large group of students come rushing in dressed in Georgia state hoodies with large panther paws on the back of their hoodies. Other students around them begin to frown and move away, as the large group creates more noise, a bulky pale skinned male passes by them throwing away his trash. With restaurants such as Pasta Mia and Chick Fil A here, Georgia state students love being greeted by employees with warm smiles that creates a intimate and stress free environment after a long day of classes.

Right on the outside of the student center are tons of black benches scattered around a ravishing selection of white daisies. An attractive pale blonde with curly hair is seen sitting at one of the benches reading ” The Notebook”, the wind slowly pushes up against her face causing her to pull strands of her hair out of her face. Touching the iconic Georgia state panther made of bronze is a group of students. Some of the students are dressed in Georgia state hoodies which on the front in bold white letters it reads” GEORGIA STATE PANTHERS”, followed immediately under it is a medium size portrait of a blue and white panther, while the others are dressed in black shirts and silver and white striped sweaters. Reaching into her pocket is the pale blonde with curly hair who approaches the large group and offers to take their photos around the iconic panther. As the group gathers around the panther, she prompts them to get ready and smile. She takes a few pictures and during the last shot the group ask her to get in the photo in the center. She does it and after gazing at the beautiful shot, the sunset is visible and creates an astonishing background. They continue to laugh and talk throughout the evening as the sun goes down and the moonlight makes a return. Outside of the student center, memories and bonds are created that last a lifetime and truly remind students of Georgia state that this is “home”.

As you pass throughout the student center, you will without question make yourself feel at home and get just a taste of what Georgia state has to offer. With endless opportunities to eat or have fun with your friends, the student center is the place for all Georgia state students to relish in.

Condesa Coffee

img_9636

Located on Auburn Ave, this hole-in-the-wall little coffee shop has a simple and clean style. From the dark chocolate brown concrete floor, laid out in a tile pattern. On top of the clean floor, sits multiple black sets of chairs and tables. Some tables are round to accommodate more people to sit around them, while some are tiny and square made for one to two people. The smell of fresh coffee filled the air, as the big wall of windows gives off natural soft light of a sunny afternoon. A large grey counter takes up half of the space, on it, it has a small display window for little cakes and cookies. It also is the place for the bright yellow espresso machine, where the male single employee spends most of his time preparing and serving coffee. He is wearing a slate grey button-down shirt and large round wire glasses. There is a pile of white small coffee cups next to a sink behind the counter, one by one the employee takes a cup and makes each coffee to order.

A taller middle age light skinned male walked into the coffee shop with a plaid blue and white long sleeve shirt. He was with two other men with similar style clothing. They walked through the glass door talking to each other while making their way over to the slate counter. One by one each man tells the skinny employee their order and one by one they sit down at a larger circler table. A few minutes past and they each were called out to receive either coffee. Each man sits differently, one with a short sleeve shirt is leaning back, while one man wearing khaki pants was sitting up straight as a board.

Behind the counter was a wall that held shelves for displaying coffee and decorative pink flowers. The wall itself is different than the other three in the shop, because of the worn chipped paint, it also has a blackboard stripe down the middle with the menu written in clean white chalk. There is a painting that is broken up into three canvases with pastel wooden scene on them. The room is lighted mostly by the natural light coming from the wall of windows but it has industrial lights handing from the ceiling in a row. They are glass balls with big round lightbulbs inside of them being held up with silver wire. There are also two white speakers playing soft music, but other than the sounds of the radio you cannot hear anything else. Next to me stood a woman with long brown hair and a huge tote bag. She has been sitting in the café for over two hours staring into a large textbook. After a while she collects all of her books from the small table facing the windows and takes her empty cup of coffee to the counter. She hands it over to the man and whispers a small thank you as she walks out the door. To the other side is a middle aged man with longer dark black hair staring into his laptop since I came in. He had brought his leather black bag with laptop and computer mouse and mouse pad with him and he set up at the next table. The lack of noise is apparent until someone new comes through the door and orders a drink. Then the loud almost screaming noise compared to the normal silence of the espresso machine comes to life.

A girl named Hannah is sitting next to me working on her laptop and I asked her a few questions about the space. Hannah explained that she liked the space because it was close to her dorm and that was very important to her. She didn’t want to walk for a while to get her coffee so Condesa was an obvious choice because it was just a short two-minute walk from her dorm. She also said that she likes the space because it was aesthetically pleasing and because it is normally quiet so it makes a perfect place to hang out and do some schoolwork. When asked if she would change anything she said no because she likes the simple, plain atmosphere Condesa provides. She also said she has and would recommend the space to anyone who is looking so a calm, not crowded place to hang out or study.

The MAC Lab

The space I chose to observe was The MAC lab. Looking around, you could see the gray MAC computers with the black apple symbol. You could see what looked to be a black television, that hung in the center of the room with a gray CD player. You could also see the paintings that hung on the wall outside the MAC Lab. You can also see the people that occupy the space. One woman with a red curly afro sits in the black swivel chair and types very fastly. A black bag occupying the seat next to her. Looking through the big, clear window, you can see a woman sitting in a green chair. She is light-skinned, with black hair and is wearing a peachy color tank top. She doesn’t have a computer or anything but she can see that she is very focused on whatever is in her lap. Across from her is a man with light gray hair who is typing very fast on the keyboard. He keeps his head down most of the time and doesn’t look up until he skims his eyes over the screen.

Next to me in The Mac Lab is a girl with a brown complexion, and black and brown twists in her hair. I politely ask her can I interview her and she says yes. In the interview, she tells me that she enjoys coming to The Mac Lab. The space is always quiet and that is essential to her because she has to do her homework. She also says that she likes The Mac Lab because of its creativity. It isn’t just a traditional work space with hard chairs and computers. The Mac Lab has swivel chairs and MAC computers with huge screens.

Each object present in the space serves a specific purpose. The MAC computers are for the people to use. They can use these computers to complete work, communicate with others, and etc. The black swivel chairs are used for sitting and for storing your personal things. The black television is used to show your ideas, hence the gray dvd player sitting under the screen on the brown table. Overall, all the objects tell why people choose to occupy this space. Based on my interviewee’s opinion, people choose to occupy this space because of its uniqueness.

Back on the top of Auburn Av

Back on the top of Auburn Avenue but this time everything is being took in. On the right side of the street the opposite side of the Streetcar train station there are a few shops; a restaurant that sells fried chicken at the corner, I can smell the aroma of grease and flour my a mile away and there is a tall slender man in a blue tie and black tuxedo just walking out licking his finger tips and then wiping them on his pants leg. There is a place called “Candy Bar” just to the right of the Chicken spot , there are firm red leather high chairs and men with glasses and women with dresses sitting in them on the outside of the shop. In between that and a hair salon there are apartment buildings labeled 171 at the top. These apartments are the only ones on this entire street , what is the value of these? These apartments have a balcony for every room over looking the street On the other side of the street there is a restaurant called “Mangos”. Men are wearing big slouchy hats and baggy jeans filled with stains and there are women with strong Caribbean dialect and colorful dresses enter and exit the place. There is a small corner store in the cut between what it seems to be, two abandoned buildings. Outside the corner store, there are boys that look like they are in their mid twenties based on appearance( skinny jeans, full beards, leather jackets, and Jordans) smoking a cigarette. Then there is the park. Same ole same ole, it smells of urine and old trash. The statue stills stands strong in the middle barely shining. And I still spot men and women with no shoes on and old ragged clothes sitting on the curb mumbling to themselves.

A pretty dark skin girl walks by. She has on a bright yellow backpack, some white high top converse that appear to be slightly worn and some tight dark denim jeans and a white tank top. “My name is Jairia,” she states. Jairia is passing through Auburn Av to get to her class at Sparks Hall. She says that the least thing she likes about this area is the homeless people and the cleanliness of it. She breezes by the park looking straight ahead, nonchalant to her surroundings.
