The Occupants

Three adults riding exercise bikes in gym (selective focus)

A field of contraptions and devices fill the entirety of the room. Rays of illumination hit every corner and crevices covering the expanse of the facility reflecting off of metal. Cushion mats of black under shoe soles can still be softly felt. People litter the entire room paired with a machine, the typical view of the weight room. The people in this space vary greatly in all aspects. There are people in the gym who appear to live there judging by their size. These behemoths are moderate in their numbers but are known when they are present as they use all the weights. a slight majority of gym goers are regular sized people. Besides the difference in stature one thing always rings true, everyone who goes to the  weight room immediately began starting their routine. Men and women alike go to the gym to train specifically for something, or just to look and feel good. Weightlifting is also a very effective stress reliever and can help induce relaxation and focus on studying. There are also a couple of older people who visit as well to maintain their personal health. in addition, there are does you just want to build their body up and feel good about it. Everyone in the weight room knows this to some extent and all of them respect each others time at a station, space, and safety. In conclusion, although the weight room’s occupants may not communicate all too much, everyone in that room is united by similar goals and aspirations in that moment.

Beach occupants

beachSeagulls are chirping and the warm moist air bounces off your skin. You look around and notice a little boy and a older man waving at a woman as she lays down on a towel with her purse and the bucket toys pinning it down from the wind. I hear chatter from a brother and sister running across the shore tossing sand at each other. I notice a woman in a blue bikini is layed face down and has untied her bathing suit top revealing her entire back to the blazing summer sun. I see a man pacing near the beach with a cart with fresh fruit cream popsicles; you can see peoples mouth watering as he passed by each family.

Favorite Place to Think

img_5042

I don’t know why this photo is sideways…

When one wakes up, too groggy to even think about what the day will consist of, there is only one thing that will truly wake them up. Not a cup of coffee, not breakfast, but a splash of water to the face. Those that enter this room are allowed to completely disrobe and not worry about a single person invading their privacy. In this space is complete isolation with only themselves and their thoughts. Those in this space obviously care about their hygiene and care about their base impression on others. But also many other use this space for serious thinking and planning. There are very few times a day when you can just sit completely relaxed and contemplate every aspect of the universe as you see fit. Those in this space have questions and this is a place where every question they want can be asked. There aren’t always answers but just thinking about these questions brings the bather a sense of happiness.

Occupants in Subway

The smell of wheat and burnt toast fills the air, and surrounds my ears. I feel warm and hungry, and I know I am about to make the most bomb sandwich in the world. I feel as if I am about to eat my heart and soul out. There is an Indian man and his wife behind the counter and the Indian man asked me if to place my order. There is an white family of  four. A mother, father, son, and daughter. They are in here for the same thing as me, and that is for the fresh, crisp, and delicious sandwiches. I peep over at their food, and notice that they each had a whole meal of chips, sandwiches, and drinks. It made my stomach growl. This family probably values family time, so they decide to go to Subway to interact, and eat together. It was a nice little time for them. Subway is a amazing place for that, and I enjoy eating there.subway

The Occupants

Everyone at Cataloochee is there for the snow. They’ve all been waiting for winter and obsessing over snow for the entire year. People in the main lodge are usually showing off their new set up for the season or telling some crazy story to their friends about the line they just hit. That really seems to bring people together give them all a sense of camaraderie. Some of the nicest, most down to earth people I’ve ever met I found at Cat.

The Occupants

Reaching the top of the mountain not only allows us to appreciate the beautiful scenery but also gives us a sense of accomplishment. The feeling of being at the peak, the accomplishment of successfully hiking to our desired destination. As I was struggling to climb up the mountain, gasping for air, I had thoughts about giving up but when I looked around, I pushed myself to reach the top. I saw dedicated people; people who were so focused on improving their health that they kept on repeating the task of climbing up and down the mountain. I looked in awe and wondered to myself, ‘Where do they get so much stamina?’ For me, climbing up the mountain once was enough as I’m not really a fit person, which was obvious to people, considering I had a soda in my hand and had a really hard time catching my breath. There were also people who skipped the task of hiking and took Skyride to just enjoy the nature and its fresh air.  Stone Mountain provides people with a friendly, welcoming environment which lets them enjoy their time however they want to.

A mother allowing her daughter to run off towards the toy area while she orders her daily coffee. Teenage friends coming after school to see if their favorite book has been released. A lonesome girl with her headphones focusing on her phone. A young man deeply engrossed into one of his favorite James Patterson’s books. Every single person with a different background story with different perspectives in life all coming together with one thing in common: their love for reading. Whether it be an encyclopedia or a tabloid magazine, these people come together to relax, take the stress of the day away, and surround themselves with people who share the same ideals and values.

The Occupants

The Georgia Dome stood still as people filled its large and cold cement halls with anticipation and rush. People of different gender, ages, and ethnicity all come together for one purpose, to cheer on their U.S. Women’s National Team. A little girl rushes in front of her parents to reach her seat in the stadium. Her face is painted with red, white, and blue, and her body bears the famous number thirteen’s jersey. The plastic red seats are quickly filled with adults, teens, and children. The dull stadium is now illuminated and filled with the colors red, white and blue. Fans wave the star spangled banner to show support for their team. The talented U.S. Women’s National Team occupies the green turf energizing their audience with hope and pride. The crowd roars in unison “I BELIEVE THAT WE WILL WIN!”.

The Occupants of Lifetime

lifetime

As people enter Lifetime Fitness, they’re greeted at the front desk with words of encouragement: “Have a great workout!” The people who occupy the space is an endless range from bodybuilders, powerlifters, marathon runners, and people that are just trying to better themselves, like me. Next, people go towards the locker room to drop off their stuff. Although the locker room reeks with sweat, the breath of air is relieving once inhaled because we feel the stress being lifted from our shoulders. Getting ready for their routine, most people empty their minds and then focus on their workout; their outside daily problems become so miniscule and meaningless. Occupants may go there to relieve stress, to maintain their health, or to train for competition. When the occupants exercise they go to their section, whether it may be the basketball court, the pool, the weight room, or the studio, they will have to wait till their space is available. Once they get into their zone, the hard part begins; even if they start sweating or tiring out, they must keep pushing forward. So this space does not only help the health of the occupants, but their overall well being too because they have to learn to be patient and perseverant. The people who go there expect to be covered in sweat and exhausted by the time they leave because of all the effort they put forth in their workout, and this can translate to our daily lives, putting all our effort in everything we do, being the best we can all the time.
