Starbucks
The interior of the cafe is not that spacious, but wide enough to fit about fifteen people in, while still having room for some elbow space. The two workers, in their green aprons with the well known siren logo printed in the center, shift their feet back and forth behind the counter occasionally spilling milk on the hard, dark grey tiled floors, while rushing to get everyone’s drinks made. On the other side, a tall, young man with fair skin enters wearing a blue flannel and dark jeans, while he holds hands with his significant other, who is wearing a dark grey hoodie, and has her brown hair pulled back into a ponytail. She has a rather milky complexion. As they close the clear glass door, a slight humid breeze can be felt from the after effect of the rain that occurred earlier. Additionally, the girl’s worn-out white Chuck Taylor’s and guy’s Nike sneakers begin to squeak as they make their way to the register. Their wet footprints leave a trail, but it is not obvious because of the dark floors. One can infer that the option to choose darker flooring over lighter ones were intentional for this space.
When the couple finally step up to the tan “L” shaped counter, they greet the short, pale female worker with chestnut colored hair and proceed to make an order. The counter top is divided into three main sections. On the right are brown and golden pastries that are displayed through a clear glass showcase that give off a sweet aroma when one of the workers slides it open, and right below is a small, black refrigerated area that has sandwiches and canned drinks that customers can also buy. Towards the center is the bulky, rectangular cash register, where the female worker is completing the couple’s order by handing them their receipt. Finally, the left side is an open black counter space, where all the customers drinks are placed when they are all done. Here the guy and girl wait until the other tan, average height male worker with broad shoulders calls out the names of their drinks; a tall caramel macchiato and a grande mocha frappuccino.
Right next to this area is a few, square-shaped, single couches that are pushed against the walls on all three sides. Two of them, colored olive green are right next to outlets, which are currently occupied by a young woman with glasses and ash blonde hair with a plain white long-sleeved shirt and jeans on. She is looking down at her Mac book that is plugged into one of the outlets with her back straight as she takes a sip of her drink. Another dark male that has on a striped black shirt is sitting in the other seat, similarly mirroring her actions, but is more slouched down. No one else seems to be sitting in the other seats across from them but there are more customers at the actual tables. Half of them are seated next to the large glass window that display the word “Starbucks” in large green letters, and the others are close by. The close proximity of the tables might not be ideal for large groups of people to gather, but it is efficient for individuals who want to study alone or just have one-on-one conversations with another person. In an interview with one of the customers named Michelle, I found that she comes to Starbucks to do her homework and study. People like Michelle, who is a college junior need an outlet, so they try to sit closer to the wall, which she was at the time. She also mentioned that she prefers Starbucks over other cafes because they have good Wi-fi. This concludes that some people occupy this space for the internet connection.
Although the main objects of this space have been discussed, there are still some minor objects that serve as functions too. One of them is the bathrooms, which are located down a small hall, but far away from the kitchen and the customers. They are most likely located there for sanitary purposes. Also, the aroma of coffee when you first walk into the shop is probably a direct effect from the coffee beans that are displayed on a small shelf not far from the main door. Across from this shelf is an even bigger shelf that has various cups and tumblers with different designs. It is mainly there for customers to buy. Occasionally the customers stop by this shelf to take a look while waiting in line, but no one ended up buying one. Lastly, next to the side door of the store, there is a tan compartment with smaller compartments that hold straws, sugar packets, and napkins with two openings that serve as trashcans below. Customers visit this area often because it contains all the supplies that they might need, whether to clean up a spill or to make their drinks sweeter. Overall this place has many aspects that make it convenient for the customers and satisfactory, which makes Starbucks a reputable place.
