Courtyard
The entrances to the mega buildings surrounding this space are like gates: allowing for flow to occurs in both directions and into the courtyard. The ever so obvious hole in the ground that spews water in a beautiful formation catches everyone’s eyes who walks by. The crystal blue water falls from one fountain into another to create a water fall entrapped in stone. Many people sit on this stone to enjoy the view and when the benches and tables around them are occupied. Sitting down on the cold and grainy concrete bench surrounded by bushes and trash cans looking as hundreds of people pass by.
The fountain gives or adds to the spaces aesthetic and gives off a vibe of relaxation. The benches and tables are there to encourage community and unity within the students. These objects control the way the students act in the way that it pushes them into a single space without suffocating each other to socialize. The bushes give the space a living growing element that it would be lacking if it were gone.
The girl with the pale skin and pink undertone sits at the fountain with her nose stuck in her textbook, a strand of her dark brown hair cascades past her ear and into her face which is framed with glasses. The boy with skin kissed by the sun until it became caramelized sits with his feet dangling off the side of the grainy concrete and he seems entranced in deep thought with a lost look in his eyes. Storming past me with a quick pace was a man who walked with a purpose. He seemed unaware of anything occurring around him and oblivious to the chatter that echoed throughout the space. His lips were a wash of red, perhaps from biting it himself due to nervousness or maybe from kissing a loved one goodbye.
The student whom occupy this space come from many backgrounds, are from different majors, and like different things. The people you commonly find at the courtyard are the art kids, the smokers, the commuters, and the loners. The people who I see with a sketchbook in their hand and medium in the other are commonly found here because it is a great place for inspiration. The smokers are often always together and can be distinguished by their smell and the obvious death tool they hold between their fingertips. They occupy this space due to their designated smoking area. Unlike residents, commuters can not just go to their dorm and take a nap in between classes so they must find a place where they can sit and do work and maybe destress themselves. The courtyard allows the loners to easily put their headphones in and not be bothered. This way they don’t have to deal with the human interaction occurring around them
