Further Analyzing Piedmont North Lobby B

When walking into the Piedmont North Building B lobby, you see the black automatic doors open once a student scans his/her student identification card to reveal the center of a student-ran world filled with what could either be a small sanctuary or an intersection of multiple interactions..  Two small, potted plants are the first to greet anyone who walks through the doors; along with a small breeze that has the same pine-like smell to it.  The resident advisor who works at the front desk( in this situation, it is a small, brown skinned girl with a small, black afro and black glasses) will already meet your gaze and ask to see your Georgia State Student Identification Card.  After showing it to them, they’ll respond with a quick smile or an abrupt “thank-you” and you’ll proceed forward.  Below your feet,  the brown-square tile floor meets the reception desk with two large desktops on top of them, both to address student problems in the residence hall.  To the right of the desk is the entrance into the lounge and in front of the receptionist desk is the path towards the two main  silver elevators and the entrance to the restrooms.

In the lounging area, the light grey walls meet a light blue and a honey brown color in a pattern(grey, blue, brown) along each wall.  A small section of the area has its own personal carpet, fireplace, and mounted television (which is unplugged).  A white table is accommodated by five soft-cushioned seats and a game of “Apples-to-Apples” on top of the table.  Another area contains a large sofa and a window split into nine sections(this gives access to the outside courtyard and the bridge that connects Piedmont A and Piedmont B).  Three small chairs(one, grey, one green, one white) sit below a mounted, black television.  Further along in the lounge area is a kitchen with a tall, grey table with four silver chairs in front of it.  To the right of this table are two sections of silver bar seats accompanied by a brown wall of outlets.  In the middle of these two sections of bar seats is an entrance into a section of the lounge area with booth sectors on both sides with a large sitting area in the middle.  The booth areas are a completely different color scheme of olive green.  The booths are silver(table and seat) with a mounted, black television available for the inhabitants use.  The large seating area in this section has a pattern of seats:  large seat(grey),medium sized seat(blue), large seat (grey) with a small table between each chair.

A group of tall, athletically built men( two of a darker brown complexion and two of a lighter brown complexion) huddle around a mounted television uttering who is going to win a specific game. One boy, in particular, is sweating as he anticipates the opposing teams next move.  His brown eyes stared at the screen of the television as he holds his head full of brown, curly hair.  His friends encourage him that his team may win, although his face shows the opposite emotion.   A small, brown skinned, thin heard girl draped in a white silk dress squints her green eyes at the group of men making loud cheers of excitement and cries of disappointment.  She props her feat upon a table, pulls out her IPhone, and begins double-tapping only to stop and jump when the boys yell once more.  At the table next to the kitchen, a short, curly haired, pale man sits reading a book while typing on his computer.  He bites into a sandwich of some sort and furiously wipes a condiment off of his red shirt before realizing he lost his page in his book.  He sighs, gets up, and meets the gaze of the small, brown skinned girl, only to leave without saying a word.

My interviewee, Kelsey McCall, was a mid-height, cream colored girl with brown eyes and straight black hair.   She wore a wrinkled Georgia State Shirt and her hair was up in a messy bun with strands of hair all over her face. As I approached her , she was packing her laptop and various cords and headphones into a small, pink book bag.  After agreeing to let me interview her, Kelsey expressed to me that she believed that Piedmont Lobby B had what many spaces at GSU did not -peace.  Although she enjoyed the space, she did say she would change the size of the lounging area and provide a door that completely separates the entrance of the lobby from the lounge.  The entire aesthetic of the lobby contributed to the peaceful vibe Kelsey received while studying or enjoying time with her friends.  Despite the occasional distractions, she says that the lobby possesses an overall peaceful attribute to it that cannot be overlooked.
