Condesa Coffee
Located on Auburn Ave, this hole-in-the-wall little coffee shop has a simple and clean style. From the dark chocolate brown concrete floor, laid out in a tile pattern. On top of the clean floor, sits multiple black sets of chairs and tables. Some tables are round to accommodate more people to sit around them, while some are tiny and square made for one to two people. The smell of fresh coffee filled the air, as the big wall of windows gives off natural soft light of a sunny afternoon. A large grey counter takes up half of the space, on it, it has a small display window for little cakes and cookies. It also is the place for the bright yellow espresso machine, where the male single employee spends most of his time preparing and serving coffee. He is wearing a slate grey button-down shirt and large round wire glasses. There is a pile of white small coffee cups next to a sink behind the counter, one by one the employee takes a cup and makes each coffee to order.
A taller middle age light skinned male walked into the coffee shop with a plaid blue and white long sleeve shirt. He was with two other men with similar style clothing. They walked through the glass door talking to each other while making their way over to the slate counter. One by one each man tells the skinny employee their order and one by one they sit down at a larger circler table. A few minutes past and they each were called out to receive either coffee. Each man sits differently, one with a short sleeve shirt is leaning back, while one man wearing khaki pants was sitting up straight as a board.
Behind the counter was a wall that held shelves for displaying coffee and decorative pink flowers. The wall itself is different than the other three in the shop, because of the worn chipped paint, it also has a blackboard stripe down the middle with the menu written in clean white chalk. There is a painting that is broken up into three canvases with pastel wooden scene on them. The room is lighted mostly by the natural light coming from the wall of windows but it has industrial lights handing from the ceiling in a row. They are glass balls with big round lightbulbs inside of them being held up with silver wire. There are also two white speakers playing soft music, but other than the sounds of the radio you cannot hear anything else. Next to me stood a woman with long brown hair and a huge tote bag. She has been sitting in the café for over two hours staring into a large textbook. After a while she collects all of her books from the small table facing the windows and takes her empty cup of coffee to the counter. She hands it over to the man and whispers a small thank you as she walks out the door. To the other side is a middle aged man with longer dark black hair staring into his laptop since I came in. He had brought his leather black bag with laptop and computer mouse and mouse pad with him and he set up at the next table. The lack of noise is apparent until someone new comes through the door and orders a drink. Then the loud almost screaming noise compared to the normal silence of the espresso machine comes to life.
A girl named Hannah is sitting next to me working on her laptop and I asked her a few questions about the space. Hannah explained that she liked the space because it was close to her dorm and that was very important to her. She didn’t want to walk for a while to get her coffee so Condesa was an obvious choice because it was just a short two-minute walk from her dorm. She also said that she likes the space because it was aesthetically pleasing and because it is normally quiet so it makes a perfect place to hang out and do some schoolwork. When asked if she would change anything she said no because she likes the simple, plain atmosphere Condesa provides. She also said she has and would recommend the space to anyone who is looking so a calm, not crowded place to hang out or study.
