Extra Credit 1: John Rich Exponential Trends in Media
On 10/29/20 I watched John Rich make his presentation on the Exponential Trends in Media. The overall conversation was fascinating as we talked through what an exponential trend actually meant. Knowing that he expects us to see 100 years of technological innovation compressed into the next 10 years is both scary and entertaining.
I can’t wait to see what happens in the future, but I do have a few questions I would have loved to hear from him:
- Why, after all of his optimism, is he moving to a small island in Canada? I feel like he’s abandoning us to the unknown only to return if we actually figured this out without killing ourselves;
- Given that Isaac Asminov’s three laws of robotics are probably not going to work, what would be his alternative laws that he would include if possible?
- Given a world where everyone will have AI, how can we ever protect our selves from it with policies/ethical boundaries that only apply to some?
Overall I would recommend watching his presentations! I have greatly enjoyed the two that I have now seen!
