Guidance for Pedagogy Interns

English majors in the Pre-Education concentration have the option to participate in the course as Pedagogy Interns (PIs). PIs complete their internships in secondary schools or in First-Year Writing and introductory literature classes at GSU. All other course requirements are the same. PIs must be matched with a supervising faculty member and complete an MOU before enrolling in ENGL 4500.

What Pedagogy Interns Should Do

  • Attend all class sessions fully prepared and ready to take on a supporting role in the day’s activities.
  • Work 8-10 hours per week (2 ½ attending class; 5 ½ -7 ½ hours outside of class).
  • Hold at least one office hour per week.
  • Meet with students individually during office hours and by appointment for mentoring, writing help, content explanation.

What Pedagogy Interns Could Do

Work with the supervising faculty to:

  • present an aspect (or aspects) of course material in class.
  • present elements of the writing process, such as thesis-development, organization, or textual support.
  • mentor students in formal and informal ways.
  • develop assignments, in-class activities, small group questions.
  • develop grading rubrics.
  • comment on student drafts of essays.

What Pedagogy Interns Should Not Do

  • Grade essays or major assignments (they may pre-grade or provide ungraded feedback on quizzes or homework assignments if their work if reviewed and approved by the instructor).
  • Work more than 10 hours per week.
  • Cover a class in an instructor’s absence or teach without supervision.
  • Make policy-level decisions regarding the course or individual students enrolled.
  • Share sensitive or protected information about the course or individual students with others or on social media.
