Post 5: Recording my Capstone Presentation

Joy Ahn

For my capstone presentation, I went for a slide presentation accompanied by an oral recording. I knew I had some specific files from my portfolio that I needed to display, so it was necessary that the viewer could see my computer screen in real time.

Making the capstone presentation helped me think retrospectively about my experience, which was honestly hard to categorize because it all felt so quick and hectic with many different challenges in quick succession. It helped me solidify my philosophy for teaching (however brief it was) and how I was able to formulate this approach by drawing upon my experiences learning under different professors.

I tried to approach my capstone as something that could potentially be shown to future pedagogy interns, so they get an idea as to the responsibilities and difficulties they may encounter. I especially made sure to spend a lot of time detailing the steps I did to prepare for my lecture because my approach was very different from the previous pedagogy intern Phuong’s; that way, future interns can draw upon both of our experiences to formulate their own unique approach to such a daunting task.

Some challenges I faced was effectively responding to the capstone requirements. For example, the internship was unique in that there weren’t a lot of references or portfolio pieces produced, compared to a traditional English internship like editing and publishing. Most of my job was through one-on-one interactions with students and professors, so I had to make sure I remembered exactly what we talked about and how those conversations influenced my outlook and approach to this internship.
