I had a meeting with the founder of Lostintheletters, Scott, today that helped me understand the organization’s purposes and plans for the upcoming year. As of right now, they are getting ready for a live author reading on February 22nd. With this meeting, I was able to get a good grasp as to what I am going to be doing for this reading, and potentially upcoming ones. In the meeting, Scott talked a lot about wanting to create a place where multiple different art forms come together for one coexisting piece. One of my tasks is to find around 5 different short Atlanta playwrights. These playwrights should be pushing the boundaries in some way and be unique in nature, but also ones that do not have a plethora of experience under their belt. I am also going to be working with Scott to create opening speech content to present the organization and author at these meetings. The opening speech for Lostintheletters normally gives thanks to all the people/organizations involved in the making of the events or those attending them. Scott normally gets a quote from someone about the celebration of art and writing, and I will be helping with this. I am tasked with researching different 1-2 sentence quotes about the value of art and coming together as a community. Scott suggested multiple different interviews and journals where I can start my research for these. He also said that he wanted to branch out more from Instagram and other social media apps, so I suggested putting the author’s reading information on PIN. This way, GSU students who are interested, can simply look it up on PIN and will gain access to it. I will be researching this, and emailing people for the information to set this up.
Interns are not required to do this, but we can go to the live readings and help set up before the event. I think this will be a fun opportunity to learn about the behind-the-scenes when it comes to creating these events. I think it would be really fulfilling to see all of the work efforts come to fruition.
I will say, I am a bit stressed about the time management of everything. I am taking on a lot this semester, so hopefully, I will be able to fulfill my duties where they are needed. I usually make a Google spreadsheet to combat all the different work/deadlines I typically have. This helps me know what I need to do in a week and allows me to see an overview of all the deadlines I have coming up.
I am more experienced in the publication and editing side, so I am excited to learn more about the creative writing aspect of things! I think this internship will not only help me grow as a writer but also help me learn in a writing aspect I am not as experienced in.
