This week was my very first week as an intern at Macmillan. This week was pretty much insane however, because of all of the things that I have had to do. The intern orientation started this Monday and went on for two and a half hours. During this portion everyone in the virtual video call got to say hello to one another and to introduce themselves. I found it so interesting that most of the interns were actually returning interns and a lot of them said that this was their second or third internship semester with Macmillan. They all sited that since they loved their team and the work that they did at Macmillan, they were absolutely set on coming back for another season. I found this to be very reassuring as I hope I will also be able to come back in the summer time. Then on Tuesday I met with George’s editorial assistant, Hannah who showed me how to order books on behalf of the company and other things. On Wednesday morning, I attended the editorial team meeting across all of the departments at St Martins. It was an extremely insightful meeting where I learned a lot of acronyms. Thursday I didn’t do a whole lot since that was the day that I had the most classes, but on Friday I arrived to school early and did a lot of work. I met with the Junior editors for the Junior Editors meeting and found that insightful. Then I met with another Junior editor afterwards who gave me my first job which was to come up with puzzles for the New York Times crossword puzzle rerun magazine. Then I met with another editor who then gave me my second job which was to read an entire novel and then to come up with questions to ask the author. I hope to get started on these tasks as soon as I can. So far, everyone that I have met here has been so welcome and warm. I can very much tell that everyone who I work with is super kind to the interns. As soon as I got on my company laptop on Monday, I opened the email to find that everyone in the editorial department had sent me a welcome email which I thought was so very nice. I then wrote them back an email explaining who I was and what my professional aspirations were. I got a comment from one of the editors on this saying that what I wrote back was sure to impress some of the senior editors which almost made me cry. All in all, I think I’m going to have a very insightful semester here and I’m over the moon about beginning everything.
