Entering Cold Reads

Victoria Faraon

Phew!  How time flies by! I have officially completed the essays I have been initially assigned to do. I plan to review a few more, so long as Olivia has any left for me. For now, we are entering into cold reads, where I will review half of the issue, and make any notes and final edits, before sending them off to Olivia by November 22nd.

However, to recap the last two weeks, I completed the second half of my article from my last blog post as well as a full new one. I found my last article to be relatively easy: the author had a firm understanding of MLA citations, so there were very few entries that needed to be altered. Similarly, the work itself was pretty straightforward with little marks for revision. However, I certainly believe that my newfound experience with editing has led me to feel more comfortable and aware of the formatting.

Having now completed my designated set of articles, I can confidently say that I have grown in my editing abilities and skills. While I still thumb through the MLA handbook from time to time, I have committed to memory recurring rules and circumstances for citations. I’m also able to use the past essays I’ve reviewed as references for some of the “weirder” corrections, like authors who go by more than one name or if a citation is a thesis/dissertation. Additionally, now that I’ve had more exposure to the actual subject matter of the essays, I can follow along more closely and point out areas of revision that are not due to my lack of understanding of the topic. When I think about where I was from the beginning of the semester, I’m in awe of how much I have picked up on since then!

I’m definitely excited to go into our cold read, but it is a sign that we are coming close to the end of this issue. My time with Studies in the Literary Imagination has been nothing short of rewarding, and I’m admittedly a little sad that we are rapidly approaching putting this issue to press. Regardless, I intend to put my best foot forward into the final weeks of my internship. We’re over halfway there!
