Beginning Process with Press53

Summary

I have met with my academic advisor which led to networking and securing an internship with Press53. I'm now in the process of being introduced to the platform which Press53 uses.

Before Press53, I had met with my academic advisor who recommended me Georgia State University’s career services via Handshake, as well as consulting with English Professors regarding internships opportunities. I found Press53 with the help of Professor Dan Holmes, who explained their work with poetry submissions and gave me contact information of their Poetry Series Editor, Tom Lombardo. Using GSU’s Handshake, I made multiple resume appointments to write and proofread which led me to learning about SkillsFirst allowing me to create a more professional resume.

Then I had an interview with Tom Lombardo via virtual conference who walked me through the process of what Press53 is, what I should expect, and interviewed me about my experience with the field of English and Georgia State University. During this interview I asked for examples of submissions to familiarize myself of the type of work Press53 handles. I was eventually sent physical copies of poems that had been submitted. Reading through all of the poems, “My Borrowed Face” has to be my favorite from Lombardo’s selections. Written by Stacy R. Nigliazzo, who wrote her experience of the pandemic as a nurse. The poems were written in various structures of poetry in a form of diary journal, reading it filled me with sorrow but proud of our healthcare providers and my sister who will soon become one.

As of recently, I received an email informing I have been registered in Submittable, the platform Press53 uses for their poem reviews. I will have a meeting on September 13 for further instructions on how to use the platform.

Notes and Citation

I am expected to read numerous poem submissions and assist in feedback. Lombardo has informed me that the internship should end by Halloween.
