Jasmine Wells Goosebumps

I chose to write about the Goosebumps series because this was one of my favorite book series to read growing up as a child. I enjoyed the creepy mystery that was presented in most of the stories. Also, this series was different and made me imagine the world if these things really could happened. I wanted to understand why parents felt the way they did about this series and stopping their kids from reading. Parents are influential in books being banned or challenged for their kids. This paper will allow me to understand censorship and why parents felt that Goosebumps should be banned.

David Levithan’s Response

David Levithan’s thoughts about queer YA fiction was an interesting article to read about this type of genre for children’s literature. I feel that by understanding his story I am able to see the importance of spreading the news about this type of fiction. Although, his book titles are straight forward they send a message to his audience and other readers to want to find out more about his books. I understand that queer kids need more authors to want to tell their story as well. I am open-minded to explore Levithan’s books to have a deeper understanding of this type of genre for children’s literature.

Jasmine Wells Response to Pure Escapism

This article by Maggie Stiefvater explains her thoughts on the  dystopian trend for teenager readers. She feels that these books reflects these readers’ world. Teenagers want to experience this black and white choice that is presented to them in these novels.  Also, Stiefvater states, “If only the evil in the world was named Voldemort, we could get down to the business of slaying it.”This demonstrates readers actually having the ability to understand what is evil and in this world it is hard to decipher this.  I agree with the author because dystopian novels are here to give young readers an outlet to a different world than what they are used too. Although, these novels do have some realistic characteristics it allows us to think about life in a different way. This creates imagination for not only young readers but anyone who reads these novels.  The connection I found with The Giver is Stiefvater talking about this black and white choice. Jonas lived in a world that was based off of this choice no adventure or creative was allowed. Everything was either this way or that no in between especially when it came to his father deciding what twin to release.  All in all, these novels are important for young readers to have this outlet available to them.

Jasmine Childhood Memory

First Memory of Children’s Book

The first memory of a book that was read to me would be Dr. Seuss “Green Eggs and Ham”. This book was very popular in my pre-k class especially during story time. I remember this book having a red hardcover back. My teacher would read it to us and pass it around so everyone could touch it. The colors in this book made it interesting to see as a child. Also, the words made it hard for me to imagine someone actually eating green eggs. Then, one day when my teacher was reading the book my classmates and I had the opportunity of trying green eggs. There were so many students against the idea of eating something green. My teacher explained to us that the flavor of the eggs would still be the same. So, I tried them and went home telling my mom that they were so delicious.

Another memory of reading this book was exploring more of Dr. Seuss books. My pre-k class read other books by him as well. I really enjoyed “Oh the Places You’ll Go” and “One fish two fish red fish blue fish” these two books were exciting and colorful as well. My mother worked at a daycare and would babysit a lot of my younger cousins and I always remembered her reading Dr. Seuss books. I feel like Dr. Seuss books made me enjoy reading books. His stories were so unique and adventurous that I wanted to read them over and over again. The memory of these books lead me and my siblings to making up fantasy games for us to play outside. It also made reading fun and we took several trips to the library.  Overall, reading was entertaining and memorable because of Dr. Seuss books for me as a child.
