Both yes and no. For the most part if the science behind time travel is reflected on in the text, then the writer tries to lean on some actual scientific theory related to the text. However, in some cases the story’s method influences the physicists to create a new theory for the idea. Doctors Benjamin K. Tippet and David Tsang wrote the paper “Traversable Achronal Retrograde Domains In Spacetime” using the time travel methods from Doctor Who as a basis (the name of the article is even a reference to the Doctor’s time machine, the TARDIS).
