This rubric is designed for the first (rough) draft of a research proposal in any course I teach. Students will submit a complete first draft of a research proposal on either an assigned topic or one of their choosing, which will later be peer reviewed and then resubmitted with edits for a final grade. The paper must include all parts that will be present in the final paper including a title page, introduction, methodology, proposed analyses + results, discussion, and references, all in correct APA 7th style.
I believe the “single point” rubric style works well for a first draft of an assignment because it allows me to grade based on completion (rather than students having points taken off on their first draft) and detailed feedback about what works in their paper and what they need to work on. This feedback can give them concrete goals for how to improve their final paper by the end of the semester.
