Wire Project: Boquet Beetle

The Creepy Crawly project was where we had to come up with an insect and make a sculpture of it out of wire. We learned how to work with wire and different techniques like looping, bending, knotting, wrapping, and several more in order to get the desired shape. The goal of this project was to understand lines in order to create volume. We also needed to keep in mind the relationship between form and function since the form of our bug could give us a hint about its function.

After doing some research, I started making some sketches of potential ideas of how to combine my three bugs. These were the longhorn beetle, the orchid mantis, and the hummingbird moth. Once I settled on an idea, I started to play with the wire. I used the thinner wire to make a small mockup of the bug I wanted to make. This allowed me to figure out how to work with wire and how I wanted to approach the sculpture. I learned some methods that worked for me like wrapping and knotting the wire in order to create the main body of my bug. I also sketched out my wings on a big piece of paper and used that as a guide to map out my wings which I learned from watching other students do the same.

By working on this project, I was able to understand 3D art a lot more and work in the 3D realm. It is a lot different from 2D because I have to take into consideration how the sculpture looks on all different sides and angles. I learned a lot and overall it is a finished work that I am proud of.
