Inside Outside Project

The Inside Out project was a project where we carved sculptures out of soap. The goal of this project was to gain confidence in thinking abstractly. We also had to create something using two different materials and make something that is dynamic and works well together. This project really pushed us to put thought into every angle of the sculpture.

This project was nearly done all in one sitting. Partly because the material we worked with was so small. We were given two pieces of soap, so I used one of them as a practice piece to get a sense of how to work with the material and get comfortable with carving for the first time. After that, I moved on to the final piece. I knew I wanted to have a lot of smooth and curving surfaces, so I worked those into the soap. I also played around with texture by poking holes onto some areas of the surfaces and etching scratch marks into others. After that, I felt a lot more comfortable just going with the flow and seeing where the sculpture takes me.
