English 1102: Themed Courses
English 1102 (Spring 2019) : Escape Rhetoric
Course Description: This themed English 1102 was designed as an end of the semester project for a graduate level Refugee Rhetoric course and intended to focus on the concept of “escape rhetoric.” Throughout the course, students investigated the definition and concept of “escape.” By specifically focusing on the definition of escape that means to “get out” or to “gain liberty,” students examined structures of power, discussed means and reasons for escape, and explored society’s reaction to those who escape (ie: immigrants, refugees, slaves, etc) by examining primary and secondary texts. This focused, themed version of 1102 allows us to see political and social issues as a varied and continuing issue that expands throughout history, ethnicity, age, gender, and race and evaluate how to influence and help resolve these issues and the people affected.

English 1102 (Summer 2019) : Memories of Atlanta
Course Description: This themed course focuses specifically on public memory and the memories of Atlanta. Throughout the course, students investigate the definition and concept of collective memory, public memory, and forgetting. Throughout the semester, students work with both primary and secondary texts to examine and analyze the “rememberings” of Atlanta as a community. We will question how, why, and who Atlanta remembers. This focused, themed version of 1102 allows us to examine our own community to discover what we hold as important and analyze the ramifications of forgetting or misremembering particular groups.
