English 1101: Themed Courses

English 1101 (Fall 2019) : Narratives as Knowledge

Course Description: This themed English 1101 focused specifically on the self, our stories and experiences, and how those experiences can be used to acquire knowledge. Throughout the course, we study theories of narrative and narrative writing techniques and situate our personal knowledge within larger frameworks of society and community.

Course Material: 

English 1101 (Fall 2018) : Rhetoric of Health and Medicine

Course Description: This themed English 1101 was designed for a pre-nursing FLC. The course focused specifically on medical rhetoric. Throughout the course, students examined the intersection of humanities-based methodology and medical practices, investigated healthcare practices in the United States, analyzed pressing medical concerns in the metro-Atlanta area, and considered the future of medicine.

Course Material: 

English 1101 (Spring 2018) : Writing for a Cause

Course Description: This themed English 1101 took a business focus and stressed how our writing can be used outside of the classroom space to influence and change our communities. The writing techniques learned in this class were crafted to prepare student for their future undergraduate classes but also their careers. The plan guiding the course was for each assignment to gradually build to the final project which was an event created, prepared, and hosted by all the students. The  semester was spent learning how to prepare for a major event, and the preceding essays allowed students to analyze ourselves, advertisements, and other organized events in an attempt to better understand how to perfect our own.
