Inside/Outside

Materials: Clay and Soap

Description:

This project was the Inside/Outside project. In this project we were to take soap and clay and completely transform them into a whole new thing. This was very different from our Creepy Crawly project because it was more abstract. We had to remove the original shape of the soap and give the clay a form that supported or went with the soap. This was to play with space and form.

Process:

I started by just shaving away at the soap almost playing around. Some pieces of soap broke off during the process and I had to improvise. I tried to make it rounder and added holes and indents. I even used water to make a ball out of the shavings. I then gave it a wood like texture. With the clay, I was given the idea in class to make it like a kind of metamorphosis. I took the clay and molded it around my sculpture. I then peeled it to make it look like it broke free. I left some of the clay to show that it emerged.
