Overview
The goal of these projects were quite similar in a sense. They both focused on showing compassion to a group of our choosing, but the two projects had different ways of reaching that goal. The first project we had to create a collage around our subject as well as use the elements of design to get our message across without relying on text. The second project expanded on that idea where we were to combine traditional and digital mediums to turn our collage in to a sort of poster to bring awareness or support to our chosen group with the help of graphic designs, text, and links relating to the group of our choosing.
Process
After my divergent and convergent thinking, I concluded that I wanted to choose compassion towards teachers. I interviewed a teacher from my high school to get an insight to his thoughts that would help with designing my poster. I then sketched some rough thumbnail which I then took two that I liked and would be expanding into more detailed pieces. I wanted to make two collages that related in a story sense to show the cycle of a teacher. A played around with sad and cool tones as well as warm and exiting colors for my composition. I liked the texture that some of my classmates were able to incorporate so I did the same using construction paper to give a sort of school feeling. After finishing my collages I took them into Photoshop where I added text and links from color picked parts of the collages. These helped each piece round out and feel united, but distinct.
My Takeaway
I think I can take a few things away from these projects. Technique and sense of thinking are the big things. Collage is a useful skill as well as a fun way o use art. A lot of companies and organization use collage in their design and promotion. Divergent and Convergent thinking are helpful ways to produce ideas as well as finalize them. I’m happy with how everything turned out. I think there is room for improvement, but overall, I successfully reached my goal in terms of composition.
