Web Design and Development

  • web_designOne concept I learned was to add a jump-to-top link for pages that are long. I’ve been to many websites that don’t have this and i’d have to scroll all the way back. This handy concept will make the viewers’ experiences better on your webpage.
  • Another concept I learned was making sure to add the date of publication and updates. This helps readers know the accuracy of a post. It allows to see how credible an up to date information is and the relevancy.

Webpage Design Tips

  • When creating a webpage make sure the font, styles, colors, and page layouts are consistent. This helps visitors know when they are on and off your page. It can also create a professional look when you pick a consistent theme.
  • Your heading font should stand out from the body of the text. This allows readers so know what they’re reading and it makes the page look organized. Avoid fonts that could difficult to read. Also, make sure the color of the font doesn’t clash with the color of the background.
  • When it comes to pictures and videos, don’t overcrowd the page. Use multimedia only when needed and to get the point across. Too many videos and pictures can be distracting.

Creating with PowerPoint

Three new things I learned

  • Outline: Think of topic, who’s your audience, and keep it simple
    • Make sure that your powerpoint has a meaning and has a audience.
  • Less text is always best
    • Avoid writing all of your thoughts on the slides. The slides should be used for key words of topics.
  • Limit the excess use of animation
    • Animation can sometimes be distracting. It is also unprofessional for some powerpoint presentations.

Most helpful – Activity 9

For this assignment the link “44 Resume Writing Tips” was most helpful. I always wondered if my resume was good enough when sending it to a employer. This link helped me make sure everything that needed to be there was there. It helped me make sure my resume was thorough and well organized. It even highlighted the worse thing I’ve been doing this whole time, sending out the same resume to every employer. This assignment in general helped me. For one, I have never included an objective in my resumes before. At first, I thought it was weird because it felt like I was writing an essay or something. But once I thought of a good one I noticed how great of a start it is.

Academic Citation

Academic citation is huge in college classes when writing a paper. In high school I was taught the many styles and how to accurately use them. One thing I learned when reading the citing source supplement was the style turabian. I had never heard of this citation style. Even though it’s quite like Chicago style it was interesting to learn about it. The second thing I learned was that you have to cite when using graphs and diagrams. That was interesting to me because I have never cited when using those and was never taught that you had to. However, it does make sense to why you have to. The third thing I learned was that you shouldn’t cite Wikipedia. The GSU library tutorial on citation styles suggested that it is a good place to start when looking for information but you should always find more reliable sources.

Netiquette

Are your netiquette practices polite or rude?

When it comes to Netiquette one thing that I learned was that no answer is the best answer. When there are heated conversations, rude comments, or flame wars happening you should not engage. Your comments just add fuel to the discussion. If you do not respond, then the person will most likely stop.

Mobile Apps

Two Mobile Apps that I think are useful for college students are chegg and mathway.

Chegg is like the bestfriend to all college students. They have great prices for new, old, or rental textbooks. They are also willing to match prices with competitors. This is awesome because as college students money is already tight, so this allows you to spend less on textbooks. College bookstores are normally expensive so Chegg is normally the best option. They aklso great for renting because some students might only need a certain textbook for the semester.

Mathway is a great app for students who need more help in math. Once you put in the formula it gives you step by step instructions on how to solve the problem. Some students need visual explanations and this is the perfect tool for them.

CRAAP test results – Unit 2 Assignment 2

http://www.justfacts.com/

Currency- Justfacts website was created in 1997. For the most part, this website is not regularly updated with new material. The last post was posted on January 21, 2015. It was then revised April 17, 2015. There are a couple of recent revisions to posts, but not a lot of new posts. Most of the post are dated from 1-3 years ago. The links however were functional. I would say overall this information might be out dated.

Relevance- As far as relevance, I believe this website has appropriate information about their topics. They have information on many different topics.

Authority- James Agresti is the president and primary researcher for this site. Stephen Cardone is the chairman of the board of directors. Both of their names were listed on the site. This site also gave their credentials. The address for contacting was listed, and they also had a contact section where you can send them an email via the site. I didn’t see a list of sponsors.

Accuracy- For the most part, I would say the information is accurate. They listed that PBS, Vanderbilt University, Fox News, and others trust them as their source for reliable research.

Purpose- As stated in their mission and vision statement, the creators’ purpose is to give individuals facts that will help them make informed decisions. The website is not for stirring up trouble or selling advertisement.

http://www.factcheck.org/

Currency- Factchecks was launched in 2003. This site has recently posted blogs, therefore the information is up to date. The last blog was posted on September 11. Also, the links were functional.

Relevance- When it comes to relevance I would say that you could find apprortiate information about various topics.

Authority- On the website they have a section where all the staff members, journalist, are posted. Each has a paragraph about what they do in their field and how long they’ve been doing it. Under the contact information they mailing address, email, and numbers. This was more than justfacts gave.

Accuracy- The information seemed accurate. The website was also very professional. The posts did include links that referenced where they got their information from.

Purpose- As stated in their mission statement, their purpose is to practice good journalism and to increase the public knowledge and understanding of politics. It is not an advertising  website.

Unit 2 Assignment 1 – Similarities & Differences of my search engines

While using these search engines and meta-search engines I noticed the three most popular websites to come up was Wikipedia, WebMD, and APTA (American Physical Therapy Association). This is probably because these three websites give the most insight to the field of Physical Therapy. This shows that all search engines generally pull up the same important information for the most part. One difference I noticed was that google and yahoo pulled up a lot of results based on my location. The meta-search engine WebCrawler search results were by google and yahoo. I found that really interesting. It also explained why my results on there were a mix of both results I got before. Another difference I noticed was that every search engine and meta-search engine had ads at the top except google, which is at the bottom.
