I liked the idea of visual rhetoric so much that I decided to enroll in Dr. Gu’s English 3130—Business Writing course after taking Technical Writing with him. In this course, I particularly enjoyed the resume and cover letter exercises that we did in our Job Search Project. With this project, the objective was to design a job search packet that could be used for a real job search. For this task, I chose to create a resume and cover letter with the idea of applying for a job in the legal field post-graduation. I used my qualifications, with a little embellishment, to design a cover letter and resume tailored for a job as a Legal Assistant for a mid-size firm in Atlanta, Georgia. This exercise taught me that identifying my target audience is critical and ensures that my intended message, which in this case was that I am an excellent candidate for this position, is communicated correctly.
