Florida A&M University
The HBCU that I chose to discuss is Florida A&M University or better known as FAMU.
The Mission Statement is as follows:
“Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) is an 1890 land-grant institution dedicated to the advancement of knowledge, resolution of complex issues and the empowerment of citizens and communities. The University provides a student-centered environment consistent with its core values. The faculty is committed to educating students at the undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and professional levels, preparing graduates to apply their knowledge, critical thinking skills and creativity in their service to society. FAMU’s distinction as a doctoral/research institution will continue to provide mechanisms to address emerging issues through local and global partnerships. Expanding upon the University’s land-grant status, it will enhance the lives of constituents through innovative research, engaging cooperative extension, and public service. While the University continues its historic mission of educating African Americans, FAMU embraces persons of all races, ethnic origins and nationalities as life-long members of the university community”.
The University was founded in 1887 on October 3rd and is based in Tallahassee, Florida.

The slithery mascot of Florida A&M University is Venom the Rattlesnake
Famous Alumni
Many famous celebrities are alumni at Florida A&M. Some include: Common, Althea Gibson, Anika Noni Rose, Cannonball Adderley, Bob Hayes, and many more!!
The alumni went on to do wonderful things for society. T’keyah Crystal Keymah is an alumni of FAMU and she went to to acting and comedy. One of the books she wrote was “Natural Women/Natural Hair: Hairstyles and Hairstories from the Front with Simple, Step-by-Step Instructions on Taking Care of Your Natural Hair.”

Not only are HBCU’s known for their famous alumni and education, but one thing that makes HBCU’s what they are today are the bands and sports teams.

Title: HBU- How About U?
Lesson Objectives: The purpose of this lesson is to inform students on what an HBCU is and how they created a culture of change in the African American community.

Construction paper

Lesson Procedure: I am going to introduce this lesson by having an open class discussion about what an HBCU is and if they can name any HBCU’s. Each table group will be assigned an HBCU to research and create a poster board about.
Lesson Activity: In this activity, the students will work in groups of 4 and create a poster board presentation about the HBCU they were given. The poster board will include 5 sections. 1. Why they as a group think that HBCU’s are important to the African American culture, 2. The name and city of HBCU, 3. The year the HBCU was founded, 4. Famous Alumni, 5. Activities and programs offered. Each student will be assigned a part in the project. When complete, student groups will present their project in class.
