“HERO/“GROUND
Professor Alembik/ Painting and Wet Media, Spring semester
For this assignment we were to develop ourselves as a hero figure independently from a setting. We were then to develop three spaces or settings for our hero. In these spaces we were to use the principals of perspective and develop settings using one and two point perspective. We were then to use digital art to insert our hero into the space.
In developing myself as a hero, I looked at what social, humanitarian, and environmental issues were most important to me. I would be the first to admit that I am not all that enamored with the human race. It’s not that I am not a fan of humankind, it’s just more often than not we are bombarded with media that focuses on the worst aspects of our species and our society. One thing I am very passionate about is my planet. I often wonder how long it will be before the next great extinction will be. If I were to be a hero, i would want to be a personification of nature, reclaiming the earth. At first I saw this hero bringing natural disaster to wipeout human kind. This seems grim, but as we know, nature is volatile, powerful and unpredictable. The more I thought about it I wanted to include the intertwined beauty of nature.
For one of my images I decided to make the hero a mosaic of natural aspects, a lion with a fiery mane, the arms water engulfing the landscape. Is the second, nature is a passive traveler walking through an apocalyptic landscape, replenishing earth with life.
I struggled with this assignment as far as developing how the hero looked. I did not was to have the hero look like me or even have a face so it took several unsuccessful approaches.
