Á La Cezanne: Project 2, Painting, Professor Alembik

Á La Cezanne

This was such a fun and educational project.  It renewed my interest in traditional painting and acrylics.

For this project we attempted to emulate Paul Cézanne’s interpretation of

nature and form through color placement and painting techniques.  This project really built off of our first project.  It allowed me to better understand the power of color, contrast, value and hue through different brush and pallet applications.  The project really excited my personal ideas about painting.  I have never had any formal or educational painting experience.  I avoided using acrylics specifically for straight painting due to lack of understanding of the medium.  In this project I came to better understand the layering process and the limitless possibilities of a color pallet.  I enjoyed seeing again the affect and effect colors can have on each other.

I love that the work of Cézanne was chosen for the project.  When it comes to painting nature I appreciate the craft and skill of painting realism and photorealism but artistically it has no appeal to me at all.  I want   to see an artist interpretation of nature, not replication.  I love the way Cézanne and his contemporaries used the application of color to shape the world around them.

So much fun!  I am already thinking about some quick little still-lifes I want to paint!
