Hue are You: Project 1, Professor Alembik

“Hue are You”

Project 1, Painting/Wet Media
Spring 2019, Lisa Alembik

For this project we explored value, hue, color theory and different painting techniques through six different different treatments of a single composition.

We started with a monochromatic palette for our first painting which allowed us to see how changing value shapes and defines a composition giving it weight, volume, shape, definition and depth.

Next we used the complementary colors of our objects for the next two compositions.  over one of the paintings a dry brush was used to scumble

over the complementary colors and the effects it has with the contrast.  I really liked the relationship of the color.  I realized this use of contrast next to each other could be used with different techniques as well.  I find it very visually pleasing.

On our last canvas we painted á la prima, coving our canvas in one sitting.  I used pallet knives with very bad results.  This is primarily due to lack of experience and knowledge about this technique.  I have seen people who do entire works using only pallet knives with beautiful results.  I did discover  that i really liked using a pallet knife as a supplemental way of applying color for a specific effect.  I love thick paint and heavy application.  The different shaped of knives can give very distinctive shape and effect.

I really enjoyed this as a starting project for this class.  I look forward to using what I have learned for future projects.
