In this studio Project for Fall semester, we were to choose a book, deconstruct it, and make it a piece of art. Before beginning this project I was mentally limiting myself to the confines of the book itself myself. In the process of completely taking the book apart, it set my mind free to so many possibilities for it. It allowed me to discover the vast possibilities of paper as a medium and I look forward to working with not only another book, but also paper in general.
I found the book “Gretel and the Dark,” by Eliza Granville by chance. I was so intrigued by the premise of the bookI had to read it. What I thought was going to be a sci-fi period piece ended up being a very dark and haunting tale of a young girl who falls prisoner in a concentration camp during the nazi regime. decided to create a piece that was a visual interpretation of the story.
