And the Prometheus said, “Build them of flesh and bone.”

“And the Prometheus said, ‘Build Them of Flesh and Bone'”: The Self Portrait Project 3D Design

2017
12″ x 36″

This was a self portrait project for 3D Design with Professor Don Dougan.

For this project we were suppose to chose something we felt represent us.  We then sculpted this representation of self and made molds of our sculpture.  After that, we made three casts of the sculpture in plaster.  We were to do three different treatments of the same sculpture and integrate them into a single (or three separate) pieces of art.

I chose a Fibonacci spiral.  I have alway felt a connection to spirals.  I realized that I had been representing this connection in my artwork for my entire life when I found some old drawings from high school as well as doodles I had drawn on notebooks.  I have always felt that the mathematical interpretation of this shape has something to do with our reality and the shape of time and space as we know it.  Of course we all know how frequently it appears in nature and it opens up an entire universal structure where shape can be represented in mathematical equations.

I chose things that satisfy the Fibonacci sequence in the nature around us, the universe, and within our own genetic code.  This was my self portrait.
