A Look into Hip-Hop Fashion

Recently, there has been a new wave of fashion trends among Generation Z. Some people like to call it y2k fashion because of its resemblance to the late ‘90s and early 2000s stylistic choices. This new take on past fashion fads includes loud colors, torn jeans, and crop tops. The distinction between 2000s fashion and now is the “rage” aspect.

Rage is a culture that has transcended from music to fashion thanks to artists like Lil Uzi Vert, Travis Scott, and Playboi Carti. Specifically, In Atlanta, there is a subgroup of creatives who are aesthetically inspired by these artists, and they are not hard to spot. Rager’s tend to wear stacked bell-bottoms, distressed clothes, studded belts, and brightly colored hair.

Playboi Carti, an Atlanta native, has encompassed many iconic androgynous looks into his wardrobe with similar fashions to Prince, The Isley Brothers, and Grace Jones. Carti, has certainly made his fans feel comfortable in their femininity, by bringing a sense of carefreeness when it comes to the style of dress to a world fueled by toxic masculinity. Since the drop of Die Lit, a melodic rap masterpiece, so many musicians have followed his steps in fashion including Cochsie and 458 Keez. Lil Uzi Vert, also being quite feminine in a fashion sense, makes very bold choices and includes Afro-futuristic pieces like platform boots and iced-out mouthpieces

Although Travis Scott does not defy gender norms as much as Playboi Carti and Lil Uzi Vert, his impact in the world of hip-hop fashion is undeniable. Scott’s go-to style of a nice, clean sneaker paired with a graphic t-shirt has completely taken over the streets. Sneakerheads all over the world that indulge in hip-hop culture use Travis Scott as a reference when contemplating their next big sneaker purchase.

It can be said that Hip Hop music and fashion are forever intertwined.
