Why the Age of the Influencer has

Gen Z in a Chokehold:

By: Tierra Ola

Over the past year, there has been debate between Generation Z (Gen-Z) and pretty much all the past generations.

Most of the debate is centered around the fact that older generations feel as though Gen-Z is lacking in more ways than one.

This includes subjects of mental health, morals, aesthetics, socialization, and even career choices.

With social media and the advancement of technology growth, the population of Gen-Z has naturally become fond of “the influencer” lifestyle.

This has Gen-Z in a chokehold, due to the glamorization of the lifestyle and the encouragement amongst peers to have creative freedom.

Social media and technological progress has led to the cultivation of a generation. Every trend, challenge, idea, and opinion has truly distorted fake from fact.

However, the problems that Gen-Z is going through seem to be exaggerated compared to previous generations.

For instance, most people ages 18-27 cannot afford to keep up with the current cost of daily life.

This has brought upon a rise in mental health, with many feeling as though they haven’t accomplished enough.

Another effect of this issue has also pushed young adults to consider side hustles or monetization of content.

Technically, being a content creator or influencer means to be someone who creates (usually videos with captions and call to actions) dealing with topics/subjects that educate and entertain others.

Considering that there are different genres (niches) that a content creator can develop and expand in, being an influencer seems like an easier route to dedicate time rather than traditional pathways (like college or the military).

Although it depends on the quality of content and your niche, influencers make almost $80,000 as a median average.

With the promise of money that could fund a sustainable (maybe luxury) life, without the difficulties that come with traditional ways of life seem more attractive to the younger audience.

However, many do not consider the time and cost that applies behind the scenes with content creation.

A number of creators show behind-the-scenes of what they go through running their business and planning their content.

Some may be still lightweight, while others may have to juggle three or more areas of work including creating content itself.

This seems to be common amongst young adults today, but what are they to do when their livelihood increases and daily life continues to fluctuate?

Going to college even seems unnecessary nowadays considering the cost and less interest with the no-guarantee of a good job after graduation.

With this in mind, many are forced to find other options that work within these trying times.
