Blog 7- Tattoo Artist

  • Original Remake
What is the content? Who created it and why? The content is basically from when Rockwell lived in Arlington, Vermont and the WWII years when there were a lot of people that wanted tattoos and it started trending. The sailor in this painting had pretty much been in ports and posed for Rockwell for this picture. I think the reason for this picture is that Rockwell thought tattoos give us a reminder of our feelings at that certain time in our lives and maybe the feelings that we had at one time, might change. But, the tattoo will be there forever to remind us. http://www.best-norman-rockwell-art.com/1944-tattoo-artist.html
  • When was the work created? What is the context of the work? This work was created in March of 1944. In this picture, to certain people it could mean many different things but I think what it was trying to show was that Rockwell was a funny guy and that his friends wanted to pose for him in a different way. http://www.art.com/products/p9388040736-sa-i5446832/norman-rockwell-tattoo-artist-march-4-1944.htm?ac=true
  • What are 2 types of analysis (other than formal) which can be used to view the work? You must explain (use) each of these types of analysis to explain your work in addition to merely listing them!  We could use a contextual analysis of the painting because there are many objects in this picture that help us better understand the time frame and the meaning of what is going on behind the painting. Such as, the the background wall in this picture shows us some tattoos that actually exist and that people have the option of getting those while going into a tattoo shop. The colors in this picture also seem to me like it was in older times. It also seems to me like the tattoos that the sailor has on his arm are getting marked out by the tattoo artist and it looks like maybe ex wives or ex girlfriends names. I could also use stylistic analysis because of what kind of style this picture is and how distinctive this picture is to other pictures. It is what makes this artists’ style so different compared to other artists’ styles.
  • I found this assignment super hard because none of my family members wanted to help me out and be involved in this picture so I had to come up with a super quick and easy way to do this and I am a terrible artist so therefore,…. this will not be my best work. This was definitely embarrassing actually because I cannot draw and I could NOT for the life of me, think of another way to insert a picture that looked like the original one.

  1. I want to commend you for making an attempt to at least complete this assignment because this to me was one of the hardest, so you see I didn’t put anything. I think you did a good job though trying to recreate it with the drawing, it’s not that bad and you still got it done. Good work.

  2. I don’t think it’s horrible – quite the opposite! It’s fun and bright and optimistic (which seems to reflect a lot of your personality, perhaps). It also feels like a reminder of simpler childlike joy in the same way that Rockwell’s work reflects on a past time as well. I’m sorry your family weren’t as bold or as creative as you 😉 but I think you solved the problem well. Be considerate of embedding the hyperlinks into the text (words) to prevent chunky hang-ups and think about how to personalize the content more by eliminating your actual project prompts.

  3. I think your remake is awesome as a sailor getting a tattoo is tradition. I like the look on the sailors face trying to look tough while he is getting such a big tattoo. I like how you simplified the painting with plan crosses and flowers it makes the painting easier to understand.
