Spectrum of Representation- LOVE

Representative art aims to represent objects and things from reality.

Abstract art takes items and objects from reality, but puts them in a different way than what they are really viewed as.

Non- Objective art takes nothing from reality and makes something interesting.

Lovers on the hill, 2009
Contempop Gallery

I feel as if this image represents representative art because it relates to humans sitting on a bench and kissing one another. This picture to me feels as if it real and it’s pretty much reality other than the fact that it is not in color. This picture is more representative than the other ones because it looks more real life-like.

Kiss II Beach Blanket
Artware Editions

This image sort of relates to the top one but it is more comic strip like than the first picture. This also has something to do with reality so I would say it represents people kissing. (LOVE) This picture is more representative than the birds because it is having to do with people.

Lawrence Alkin Gallery

This last picture I put is 2 birds that seem to look like they are kissing. They are putting their beaks together and this is pretty realistic but it seems that the other 2 pictures are more realistic than this one since the other pictures have people.

Representative:

Love, 2016, 2016
DIGARD AUCTION

I chose this picture because a heart shape is in real life, yet the picture seems to be misunderstood. It looks like it could possibly be a painting or a window with writing on it.

Love, 2017
Contessa Gallery

This second picture favors the top one, but it is in a different color and it is also misunderstood. From the color of it though, I would have to say that it represents love as well.

Abstract:

Dan Baldwin
Love Birds, 2016
Maddox Gallery

This picture flows with the category abstract because I feel as if this is a lot of just jumble thrown together in a picture to represent love according to the title yet we cannot see the “love” in the picture. This picture is more non-objective because it really doesn’t look like it serves a purpose since there is just shapes and colors everywhere.

Valerio Adami
Incontro, 2014–2016
The Mayor Gallery

This last picture was really hard for me to find and I feel like it could actually be placed into more than one category depending on how you observe it. I chose it because if you look closely, those are not meant to be people I don’t think. It looks like shapes formed together to create the people. So it kind of looks like a jumble of colors and shapes thrown together to make this picture.

Non-Objective:

  1. You had a good variety of images. I think some of them were more spot on than others. The theme was consistent and well put together. You could have showed a more fluid representation of the spectrum.

  2. I liked your pictures it was easy to follow your theme throughout the blog. I believe your thoughts were correct for all of them.

  3. I liked the pictures you used for this assignment, especially the first picture. It seems like we both tried to stay on one theme and this is a good one and I feel like you did a good job with finding all the right pictures for the spectrum

  4. I’m a little confused about the order overall – it seems like you started off with representational but then you have a section labelled as “representational” and it’s not clear from their description if this was a typographical error or not. This seems likely as you’ve got a “non-objective” section at the end that’s empty but I’m just not sure one way or the other? Making sure to look at your work after posting and editing for issues like this will be very helpful in the future. Currently, the images you have under the section you’ve titled “representational” are really more non-objective and the ones you have listed as “non-objective” are actually more abstract than anything else. As a result, it seems that perhaps the application of the terms outlined (correctly) at the beginning was more of the problem than simple editing.
