Plaster Project

For this plaster assignment we carved plaster using volume, mass, negative space, abstract shape, nonobjective shape, primary contours and subtractive sculptures. The sculpture must be able to stand on its own. The goal was to get rid of the cube shape so that it wouldn’t look so perfect, as well for the hole we drilled. I approached the concept by first taping blocks of foams together, run water through it to check for leaks; if there are no leaks you were good to go for the next step. The next step I did was the create the plaster with a group with water and plaster mixed together. To do that we used 52oz of water and 112oz of plaster. After, I poured the plaster into my cube and waited for it to dry over the week. Once the plaster was harden I used plaster removing tools after drilling a hole for a starting point. I then carved the plaster into the details I wanted with chisels and other carving tools. At the end I did not finish it off with a milk bath. What I learned by doing this project is this can be a stress reliever, something new to me and would be something to continue doing, and just carve away to make something unique and beautiful. Also, that it doesn’t have to be perfect just an imagination of what you want it to be and what your peers see it as from their perspectives. What I wanted to learn was how much time do artists put into their plasters that are big and their process of creating them.
