Health & Wellness

Every week I attend kickboxing classes at GSU’s rec center. The classes gives me a sense of empowerment, knowing I can not only defend myself. But I am also keeping my body both healthy and fit. For example, since I’ve been going to classes I drink a lot more water, make more health cautious food choices—such as salads, veggies, less starch etc.; and I also get a work out in at least 3 times a week. Outside of the classes. Attending classes has also been a self-esteem booster. If I feel like I am looking and feeling my best, than most likely I generally have a better week. Knowing I can get through anything I may face. I believe a “healthy lifestyle” first starts with self-motivation. Believe you can achieve your ultimate goal. But living a healthy lifestyle isn’t just about eating right or starting a new diet. A healthy lifestyle to me is having the strength and determination to seek as well as enforce change. That will be beneficial to your life as well as another. Not just through nutrition and exercise. But also through the way we think, act, and live as individuals. Positive thinking usually brings encouragement. Which helps in overcoming everyday challenges and help us make healthier choices in our lives. Making life a little easier to bare and live through.

Academic skills resource visit

I attended a student success workshop, called study skills 5.0. We basically discussed way to take notes, prepare for exams, and stay focused throughout our academic careers.  Some of the suggestions for taking notes were to first determine our learning style. Whether it be visual, audio,  or tactile. We could use this to help us understand what we are recording. By analyzing it based on our unique learning abilities. By using abbreviations, drawn images/pictures or highlighting excessively. We must do what makes us comfortable and provides the most help.  Some suggestions for exam preparation were to review before it, attend study groups,  prepare ourselves emotionally,  and just stay positive. If you believe you can achieve it, you mostly likely will. Some suggestions for during the exam were also made. Like reading the essay questions ahead of time, using notes from previous questions,  and never leaving blanks. To prevent future failures. An topic was staying focused by using different memory tactics. Such as acronyms, mnemonic devices, and memory games.  This allows for the lesson to be retain and stored in our minds.  Which could be helpful in staying focused and ahead in all of our classes. So, overall I learned the importance of having such useful skills when it comes to excelling.

Time management

time sheet

How I actually use my time compared to how I should spend it is totally different. Most of my time is spent studying and attending class. I don’t really have a moment to breathe or successfully nap between classes. Some of my biggest challenges will be staying focused, having enough time to complete a task, and exhaustion. I can never seem to stay focus. My mind is always running all day, everyday in a million directions. Which shortens the time I have to complete things. Making me exhausted and frustrated that I don’t have the time. In the future, I hope to correct this by staying focus and strategically planning my every move for that day. So I don’t get deterred from the past I am supposed to be on. To avoid procrastination I could take breaks in between long study hours or assignments. To prevent brain overload. If I could highlight all my priorities such as work, school, assignments, and extra curricular activities. Then making available time for them to be done shouldn’t be that much of a hassle.
