Web Design Tips

1. The web site should look consistent, but should also have edges to show boundaries. This will help the person know that they have gone from one region to another region.

2. Always make a search available to your users from every page of your web site.

3. Have a header so that your visitors have an easy way to navigate around your site.

Digital Presentation Tips

3 New things that I learned about digital presentations:

1. Don’t use auto play for videos. it is always better to start the video yourself. The video might start in the middle of you staying something that is really important.

2. Don’t over crowd your slides with too much data. Keep it simple.

3. Overall, keep that whole PowerPoint simple. Don’t put down everything that you are going to say. The audience doesn’t want to have to read along. They want you to teach them the information and the PowerPoint is just a helping visual aid.

Resume

I found the 44 Resume Writing Tips and the Lynda.com sites to be most helpful. I learned to not go under 11 point font, but really you shouldn’t go under 12 point. Not to put “duh” type things like “references upon request”, type things. I also learned to put more nouns and bullet points to make it easier for employers to search for you. And its okay to have white space. I really like that Lynda.com has a lot of videos that will walk you through step-by-step so that you don’t miss anything. I really think I will use this site in the future.

Academic Citation

Three new things I have learned about academic citations:

1.  There are more styles than just the 3 I knew (MLA, APA, & Chicago)

2.  To cite someone’s spoken words, like a professor and anything of that sort.

3. Cite all pictures that you take from the web as well.

Plagiarism

The Acadia University tutorial was pretty basic of what I have learned all throughout my high school and college career. But I did like that it was interactive and allowed you to kind of “play along”.  The only thing that it did not really say that I have heard over the years is that you can get jail time for it and lots of fines.  Plagiarism is a felony in some states and depending on how much you plagiarize.

College Mobile Apps!!!

1. CRAM

This one is great! You can use it on your computer, tablet, and cell phone. It is for android and iOS devices. This app allows for you to make flashcards for your classes and always carry them with you without having the paper cards. And since most of us have our phone where ever we go…you can now study anywhere 🙂

2. EasyBib

This one is a MUST HAVE!! This app helps your write all of your citations for your books just by scanning the UPC on the  book. It generates MLA, APA, and Chicago Style. And it is also available for iOS and Android devices.

Unit 2 Assignment 2

  1. http://www.justfacts.com/

Currency – The site has been around since 1997 and looks to be very up to date and revised regularly.

Relevance – If you are looking for any type of news related articles, this cite looks to be pretty spot on.

Authority – They are a non-profit research and educational institute. Their president and chairman have Bachelor of Science degrees

Accuracy – The site seems pretty accurate. They cite their sources in each article.

Purpose – I think this site is just trying to pass on the news.

I think this is a pretty decent site according to the CRAAP test. I think that is passes the test with flying colors and is very well set up, even if it is a “.com” site.

  1. http://factcheck.org/

Currency – The site never actually says how long it has been around but it does say that the earliest Foundation that it accepted money from was in 1993. All of the articles are dated, but none seems to be revised.

Relevance – Like the last site, this is a news related site.

Authority – The people that write the articles are really just reporters and we all know how reports can be sometimes. They can over exaggerate and under exaggerate things. I do not think that this site has the same authority as the other site.

Accuracy – Again, I think that this site might have some “he said, she said” and some biased opinions in it.

Purpose – Like the other site, I think this site I trying to pass on the news, but it just might not be all correct news.

I think this site isn’t as great as the other one. I think that if someone were to use this site they would really have to make sure that the facts are just that, facts. I would cross-reference all of the information that I got from this site.

4.  Majority of my search engines came up with the same 5-7 sites including the individual search engines and the meta-search engines. The only real difference between them was that they were in a little bit of a different order. Some only had a few switched around and others had not a single one in the same place.

How to be a Successful Online Student

My 3 main pieces of advice to be a successful online student would be:

1. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE!!!!!!

2. Don’t get side tracked while you are working on the assignment

3. If you have a question, DO NOT be afraid to ask. Ask a fellow student or the instructor. Everyone is here to help. If you put it on a discussion board, it might be someone else’s question too.
