Objective: Create an abstract composition with a dynamic and believable sense of space considering the elements and principles of art learned in class.
Materials: 22” x 30” Stonehenge Paper, charcoal pencil, Art Gum eraser
Process: In this final project I was asked to select a phrase that was meaningful to me. The phrase I selected comes from an expression that I often shared with my students – I emphasized that we all need outdoor spaces; that time spent in nature calms the spirit and soothes the soul. During this exercise I repeatedly wrote “Calms the Spirit and Soothes the Soul” while blind-folded and listening to music. The Instructor played different musical selections and provided direction; at times telling us to rotate the paper.
After removing the blindfold I looked for and emphasized patterns in my writing/drawing. The final image was created by erasing to define the patterns that spoke to me. I used charcoal pencil to define the central swirl in the piece.
