I took my curiosity on an adventure which is how I ended up at the CDC Museum. From there, I came in contact with information of a variety of different types of microorganisms. Getting there wasn’t easy when you have to take an Uber with two other people (and myself) who had no previous experience with hauling a ride.
I chose the CDC because it seemed like a fascinating place that I’ve always heard of but never been to. The security guard at the front desk by the entrance was very sarcastic and at some point it was hard to tell when he was joking or being serious. Nevertheless, we were given name tags and were off to explore what the exhibit had to offer.
I asked a security guard inside if they had free tours guides and I was told that there was some. Unfortunately, I didn’t see any tours going on, so I continued to explore the site with my friends. I was excited to discover new rare microorganisms I’ve never heard of before but on that aspect, I think I set my expectations too high. It was also a smaller museum than I assumed it would be. Although I’ve already heard of a lot of the microorganisms before, on my second-round walking through all the display I became fixated on malaria! From the information on the display and by doing additional research, I found out that the CDC was established through a program that was supposed to help control malaria activities during World War II. This information told me that malaria is a very serious issue and I wanted to investigate more pertaining to it.
I’ve learned that malaria belongs to the genus Plasmodium. I made the image below to help visualize malaria taxonomic classification.
I hope anyone reading this enjoyed the blog! See you in the next one. Oh, but one last thing before I go here are some pictures. I’m not a big picture person but I’ll share this one time.
