The inspiration for this piece was my mother. One day she came home raving of this beautiful flower her friend gave her from her friends tree and the way it floated on the water she put it in reminded me of a lily, and the next day it was slightly brown / dying, but why, I asked and then I was inspired.
In this picture I want you to see the good the bad and the ugly not just the outer beauty of a flower. I also want you to see that the branches are holding the magnolia up, but that just like life the same things that hold you up sometimes pull you down. And that’s where the rope illusion comes in. I want you to see the magnolia in the entirety of everything it is like I do.
Process of creating this sculpture was to cut the paper in half to make a dome shape and then use subtractive cutting to make the remainder look like flower petals with a sharp edge, however it wasn’t full so I used the excess paper to make more petals, making the piece look fuller. lastly I crumbled and rolled some strips of paper and then arranged in a way to serve as leaves / vines and double as rope while arranging them to be an interesting support.I also did folding.
