Project 4: Mixed Mediums

Project 4: Mixed Mediums

Date Completed: Spring 2022

Materials: Crowquil Pen, Ink, Conte Crayon, Charcoal Pencil

Description: Project 4 used different mediums of conte crayon, ink, and charcoal pencil. For the self portrait, I used a black conte crayon. I held the crayon on its flat side and used back and forth stroking motions. I chose to use lots of smudging in order to build up value. A critique of this drawing was that I looked sad and I agree. For the bell peppers we used various techniques such as contour, hatching, cross hatching, ink wash, and stipple. For the contour I followed the general outline of the pepper. For the hatching one, I used horizontal lines to show the form of the pepper but struggled a lot with this one because I have never done a hatching drawing before. The stipple was also difficult because I never did a stipple drawing and I had a hard time making the drawing look good. The wash bell pepper I did involved using ink and a paint brush to spread color. My wash bell pepper didn’t look like a bell pepper. It looked sort of inflated. For the last bell pepper, we were allowed to do whatever we wanted. I had no idea what to do so I did some hatching and did a light wash over top. I don’t like the way it looks. The next part of the project involved doing bones in conte crayon. I chose an arm bone. My first drawing was dramatic with intense reds and black. This made it look like it wasn’t a bone. My second one let the paper show through more and I only used the black conte crayon. It looked more like a bone. I learned how to use new materials like ink and conte crayon. I also learned how to do hatching, cross hatching, and stipple which I have never done before. During the critique, some words that came up were clean, simple, expressive, and buoyant.
