“Self-portrait” Collage made from magazine clippings, acrylic paint on cut-out paper, June 15, 2022

For this project, we were tasked with creating self-portraits through collage, using images from magazines, items from our kitchen such as food wrappers, and cut-out paper that we either drew or painted on. I first brainstormed my concept by browsing magazines sitting around my house and picking out images from pages I thought might look nice. I put the collage together sort of like how you might complete a puzzle, finding negative space and inserting different shapes to see how the composition looked. I compiled images of drawn, fake plants and images of real plants and decided to combine them, to symbolize both the synthetic and the natural world around us and how they come together to form our world.
